Buying one of last of the Cerbs
Discussion
I'm looking at a 2003'03 Cerb 4.2 with 22k miles and the Tuscan style lights - I've had a bit of a search on the forum but cant find much - is there much difference between these and the earlier ones? (i.e. is there much point paying for youth!).
I'm guessing on a Cerb less than 5yrs old the chassis will be good, and I've read that it's the 4.5 head on a 4.2 lump (or the other way round!). Are these later engine/clutches any more robust, or am I likely to need an engine rbuild on it before long if it hasnt been done already?
Thanks in advance....

Not a huge amount of difference that I know of, the biggest facelift being around the 2000 which made a number of changes, but after that not a lot. I have heard mention that the factory guys always said the late 4.2's were among some of the best Cerbs made, that is probably down to the engine which you are aware of; it is indeed the other way around from what you said, 4.2 induction system on 4.5 bottom (this has never been officially verified as far as I know, but seems to hold true). No one knows quite what year/cars etc fell into this group, it probably came down a lot to what was around and in stock at the time. Also you might get late niceties such as the indented angled rear number plate which looks much better in my mind than the earlier backlit numbers, which appear to be just slapped on the back end - I never understood why they modified the Chim to this style in 98 but only the very late Cerbs (02 or so) seem to get it.
At the end of the day, youth, as with many cars, can help but then older cars have often been fettled more and often improved upon. If they have needed new shocks they may now be running Nitrons or Ohlins etc, they may have had a recent clutch which a newer car maybe due - at the end of the day each car will have to be taken on it's merits.
