Is it just me or does this make absolutely no sense whatsoever. I'm all for people being stopped for "flouting basic driving laws" (hope this means middle lane hogs, tax/insurance/licence dodgers and inattentives, but fear it means 33mph). However, how can this possibly have been "prompted by a sudden rise in burglaries."

1,900 stopped in police checks

HUNDREDS of motorists in Amersham and Chesham were checked in a police crackdown on crime.

More than 1,900 drivers were stopped in four hours last Wednesday, in a bid to catch motorists flouting basic driving laws.

Officers also linked 42 vehicles to crimes using automatic number plate recognition systems which cross-check a vehicle's history on the police database.

Sgt Steve Buckland, of Chesham police, said the operation was prompted by a sudden rise in burglaries across the Chiltern district.

I believe that for the local Police to be setting up an operation as this ..they are subject to certain budget constraints.

If they want to stop loads of cars but need/want funding (because its not cheap to set up) then they put it down to a particular problem in order to obtain the necessary funding.....that how the world works im afraid.

It doesnt really matter what they call it does it?....at least the Police are getting out there and trying to sort out crime etc.

I guess there's a correlation between people who nick stuff out of houses and people who nick cars to transport said nicked stuff/fail to have ins or rfl etc - contempt for one law goes with contempt for other laws.

I suppose that the BiB thought that if they had loads of resource out checking for nicked/illegal cars, they might as well have a chat with joe public about crap road use while they were at it. Like you, I hope they were concentrating on lane discipline, tailgating etc - bit of driver education

[rant] what happened to all the public information films we used to get? Remember Weaver Birds, how to do junctions etc? They actually meant something; 'Speed kills' is just a meaningless phrase. [/rant]

The Police could just as easily (apart from needing warrants I guess) encircle just about any housing estate, enter homes, run a few checks and searches and dig up all sorts of wrong-doings.

"But fear it means 33mph"

Mon Ami Mate - you could well be right, a friend of mine was stopped in Amersham last Saturday night at 1:30am, and given 3 points, for doing 38 in a 30. Makes my blood boil. Thames Valley Police, don't get me started!

Sorry for the thread hijack but I agree...remember 'Think once, think twice...Think Bike !'....I wish they'd bring that back instead of the garbage that they're churning out now.
