Has anyone driven an S1 and an S3?

What are peoples opinions on the ride/handling differences between the S1 and S3? As far as I can tell there were continual attempts to improve the ride and engineer out dive under braking on the S, but I didn't really detect any major problems with either on the S1 I drove recently. I suppose there is always room for improvment, but if I drive the two cars back to back what sort of improvments should I expect?
Secondly, should a standard non-cat 2.9 S3 feel noticeably quicker?

Chris - I think with the age of the cars now there will be bigger differences down to how the car has been maintained.
I wouldn't be surprised to hear a tip top S1 feels quicker and better than an average S3.

I have an S3 and drove an S1 a couple of months ago , chap i meet on here.
The perceived wisdom is always buy on condition , its good advice but ...
I would rather have a later car , the shorter doors are just too awkward for me to get out of , its just not worth the hassle . I also much prefer the later dash . Its personal preference though and in terms of performance some cars just are not well set up and i know from experience it can be hard to find a garage that really knows their way round an old ford V6 , so you will find a difference between cars but not necessarily between types . Best one I drove was an S3C but it was a dog . If the S1 you have seen is a good car and it ticks your boxes you wont regret buying it , look at a few though if you can , in my view there has been some remarkably cheep S3s and even S4s sold in the last year , if you can find a well sorted late car its a better deal IMHO .

I prefered the look of the later dash in pictures, but the early one seemed to work pretty well in the flesh. Ditto, the short doors were a little strange, but they didn't prove any problem and given my rather tiny garage these may in fact be an advantage!
The main thing I'm interested (after individual condition of course) is whether the driving experience is greatly enhanced by the later engine and the revised suspension.
