Corroded outriggers...

During my annual service the nice garage man has discovered some corroded holes in the rear outrigger tubing around the triangular mounting plates on both sides

To cut out and replace the tubes the full length down both sides he quotes £2500 as a ball park figure..

Now my car is probably worth about £4500.. needless to say I am pondering the worth of spending the money..

MOT is due in March and it wont pass without this work being done.. I don't fancy doing a body off job myself.

I wonder what the scrap value is..?

What would all you fellow owners do.. give us your tuppenny worth..

I'd run a mile from anyone who quotes £2500 for outriggers for starters.

It all depends on where the holes are. If they're NOT on the main rear suspension mounting tubes (the thick ones visible from inside the rear wheel arch) then it's a well-trodden and relatively simple job. If it is the big tube it's a very complicated repair.

Fortunately it's usually the little tubes that go first.

Look at my little shop of horrors I did the lift at home but total cost for all welding that was done at a professional body shop was about £600. This included both outriggers - full replacement, front section of outriggers - rework/replace, both large outrigger end sections - replacement, drivers side trailing arm outer brackets repair and replacement, transport back to house and some work at my home as well (another hole was identified after work had been "completed" but in a different location from agreed package.

If you don't need the large outriggers done you can replace the outer sections with a partial body lift which is less than a days work to achieve at home (half day to lift and half a day to drop - welding time extra).

£2500 - really just shows he doesn't appreciate the ease of a body lift.

Even Austec only charged £1,350 inc vat a couple of years ago for outrigger replacement including full chassis clean and subsequent waxoyl.

Get anothet quote or two.

Just looking through my old emails - Moore Racing were recommended to me aswell (I know nothing more) - they will pickup too at a cost but I guess most of them will.

Hi,

I have just this minute finished having my chassis welded up - £280 for 10 hrs work - fantastic job - is it your rear beam, if the brackets are ok - then belt down a 2 inch tube down the beam and puddle weld it in including the holes you have. It can be fixed, mine had rotten brackets, everything is sorted now.

Well thanks chaps for the threads..as ever plenty of you guys have been down this road already.. it's great to get your experiences.. most helpful.

I emailed Mr Gugleimi and he came back with his detailed quote right away... 8 to 12 hours work at £40/hour. £60 for materials plus VAT...so that pitches it around £640..bit of a difference methinks

Looks like a trip to Daventry is on the cards.

I like my car.. deffo worth the spends..

Thats a superb price, i had my front outrigger corners done with a partial lift and it was over 20 hours labour. Total bill was about 1250 + a couple of other bits they did for me. It was at Dulford Automotive in Collumpton, Devon

Ive just replaced the outriggers on my S with T45 ready for my rollcage going in for this year's racing .. I did it by cutting the floor away inside (i had to do this anyway as the cage bolts in from above onto a large plate) but it's an option to a body lift as you can just reglass the bits you cut out back in place again .. took a day to do both outriggers.
