1989 BMW 535i and 1989 BMW 325i: Can the engines/boxes swap

I have just bought a 1989 BMW 325i auto ( E30 touring ) and would like to swap the motor for that out of a 535i auto ( E34 ). My questions are, the engines, are they physically the same? Can I mate the 535i motor to the 325i auto box or will I have to swap the whole combo and will it fit? Any help greatly appreciated.

Its getting to be quite a common swap now - if you look over on e30zone.net there's plenty of threads and info on it. or google e30 m30. I just bought an e30 myself with the long term view of putting the late 90's 2.8 in it, should be awesome

i think one of the guys in the mag Practical performance car did it. he then put a turbo and M5 plenum on there to!
