Vr6 Engine / ECU help please

Have tried a couple of gti/vw forums but no luck so far 
I've recently aquired a P plate Volgswagen Golf VR6. The ECU is knackered, as is the engine. I've located a replacement engine from a car of the same year, which should drop straight in. My problem is what to do with the ecu - is it possible to get my knackered one re built - or do i have to get another one and change my lock barrel/ignition reader/dash pod?(this would be a royal PIA if i have to do all this). Alternatively can i search for an ECU with the same code as my original one and plug it straight in, or are these things encrypted to the car/key?
Lastly, has anyone ever converted a VR6 into a successfull track car, or are they a tad front heavy?
