Hi Guys

Dream Machines advised me that they offer a chip that ups the power on the SP6 by 15% across the range. Price was circa £300.

I have my RV8 chipped and was mighty impressed but does anyone have any experience of this mod? Obviously given the potential fragility I am a little nervous about changing things but keen to unleash more power if it is available.

Does anyone have any experience fo this?

Richard,

I have no experience of the Dream Machines chip, but personally I would go to Austec and get it set up properly on their rolling road. That way you get results before and after. I think there is a danger that just putting a new chip in might have a placebo effect and also you get what you pay for. I would recommend a re-map at Austec though - have a look at my before and after dyno charts on the SP6 forum to see what can be gained and even then the numbers don't tell the whole story in terms of how much better the car is to drive post re-map.

Sorry my RV8 was done at Austec and personally I would go back there for a ) the chip and b) set up but just wanted to know peoples experiences of the chip given the engine 'issues'. Will check the SP6 forum, thanks

A generic chip will never be 100% right, esp. considering all TVR engines are a little different. A tune up with the re-chip might be though. Is this an Autec sourced chip, or a TVR Power one (do a search, TVR Power had some kind of re-chip I think).

TVR produced a number of mapped chips during the S6's life, some apparently slightly better than others.

I tried one at TVR Power in my '04 but the conclusion was virtually same as original in that particular case.

Several respected tuners I know advise that most of the original chips are generally pretty well-mapped to the engine's needs, so there is little to be gained with the alternative of a bespoke full re-map (unlike with the RV8!) unless there have been significant changes to the engine's breathing or exhaust systems. smokin

I had my Tuscan re-mapped by Austec a while back, and was very impressed with the results.

I had misfire problems recently, and in the process of finding the fault, tried an EEPROM from another mapped Tuscan. The difference was noticable and evident by a 'flat-spot' at about 4500-5000rpm.

This reinforces the point that each engine is different, and that an 'off-the-shelf' chip may not give you the best from your particular car.

Interesting. I'm sure Austec's re-map would have been optimum solution, but still not sure that would have been any better than changing to one of the later, allegedly more throughly mapped, chip maps? Many tuners say the engines are pretty consistent in their requirements.

But I stand to be corrected....

15% i dont think so, i had the sagaris remapped on powers rolling road by john ravenscroft and he said that the original chips were pretty good, the remap made cold start a little better with slight gains in power but nothing too noticable

Hi Richard & Julie,

Word on the street is, that you are looking to get the new chip, so that you can catch that white transit van that gave you the slip in Wales last year. Looking forward to seeing you both at the next meet at R&C, with your new car.

Best wishes
Paul & Val

The van was red, that's why it was so quick!

Hi Richard, Dont you think the standard 3.6 is quick enough for normal roads ?, if however your looking to increase lap times on a trackday, IMO you could start by fitting a set of R888' which when warmed up will give you more grip which means quicker into a corner quicker out of a corner therefore quicker down the straight bits, hence quicker lap job done, but if you do get chipped let me know how it goes, maybe see you at C/Combe or somewhere this year.

Hi Ken

Good point, do you use R888's all the time or have a spare set of wheels? - getting the diff checked soon too!

One serious issue though is noise, where did you get your silencers? I have a JP exhaust which is 110db and the previous owner no longer has the original to refit. It has rolled adges so a normal track sleeve wont fit.

Either cut the rolled edges off or get sleeves made that slide inside with a hole and a nut welded on so I can secure with a bolt but I seem to remember that your slid inside the tail pipe?

Cheers

Richard,

If you're thinking of track days and R888's, I'd also think about some decent wheels if you haven't done so already - spiders are not always robust enough. There are stronger and lighter wheels out there.

Hi Richard, Just bought a set of Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 wheels and some R888,s to go on them will be fitting them on mid Feb hope to get a track day in before we go to Spain, at the moment i've got Dunlop SSR,s on as R888,s were in short supply when i needed to change, good tyre but take a bit longer to warm up, i usually leave track tyres on all the time, Ive got two sets of mufflers for T/Days one set which i had made to get me below 105db and one set that gets me just below 100db those i got from Merlin Motor Sport at C/Combe both fit inside the tail pipe held in with a small self tapper had to drill a small hole in the tail pipe, hope this helps,

Regards Ken.

Hi G, thats the one, not sure about a Sagaris though, have you got a sports exhaust on yours, whats your db reading,i think Daftlad's got a standard exhaust on his Sagaris and gets passed most scrutineers, i'll take some pics of my bespoke one's and post, they're not so big as motorsports and may do the job if you can get some made up.
Regards Ken.

If you have a standard Sag exhaust system fitted, this will be fine on track days. If you decat or fit a different rear box, or even remove it, you dont stand much of a chance getting on track. You could always go for a noisy day.

If you have decated, you could use the blue flame exhausts that are slightly silenced. They will drop the db by about 5, and with the extra silencer tube fitted in the end about 10db.

Most/my (standard)Sagaris runs about 99-100dbA and 2-3 more if de-catted, but issue is at 98Dba tracks

Look forward to your photos
