Heres one for you: Retard or not ?
Discussion
My mate took a few videos of my 328 Sport through the gears (whilst driving at Vmax obviously) and I posted them up on Youtube, you know, just for shits and giggles.
Obviously I've had the usual retards posting their obscenities etc, and the odd constructive comment, however it does leave me to ask:
Should I hammer my engine, or not?
Its obviously been remapped, and feels stronger than it should be - the 328 engine being restricted means, in my opinion, that its more than capable of handling the abuse - its not like its a M3 engine thats on the cusp of its design limits...
Your thoughts chaps?
Edited to add: Heres the video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GZAxddlDb0I
The cars always serviced well, fed with the proper oil and run properly. Various fellow Phers know the cars strong and doesn't sound like a bag of spanners...

when it goes pop which it will with you holding it at 6500-7000 rpm i will laugh ..... whats wrong with getting to the redline and then changing gear ???? Obviously I've had the usual retards posting their obscenities etc, and the odd constructive comment, however it does leave me to ask:

I was baffled by the way you were holding it right at the top of the rev band for so long for no obvious reason. Were you just trying to prove that the engine wouldn't blow up, or did you actually have a reason for keeping it there?
I was waiting to accelerate past an overtaking car on the *track* and so was waiting to 'go' as it were...The remap has moved the power up the rev band and it does drive rather like a 16v engine - of which my last Golf was - and was unburstable. I'm not obviously trying to 'prove' this one isn't, but its quite happy to do it.

In response to it blowing up at 6.5-7k: That is utter rubbish. A rev limiter is in place to stop the engine ''blowing up''.
Inedequate and infrequent servicing will do far more damage to an engine, than being held at 7k for extended periods.
Carlos
the rev limiter should cut in at around 6500 rpm which yours isnt, i would imagine one of you re-map benefits is that it doesnt cut in as its a software feature AFAIK.... but it doesnt matter to me much im just glad it isnt my car..... Inedequate and infrequent servicing will do far more damage to an engine, than being held at 7k for extended periods.

Don't forget that the 328 engine is heavily over engineered, and by defualt from the factory massively restricted. This leads to an understressed engine.
Add in that the M52 engine is a well regarded toughy - I'm sure it can handle a few revs.
Its not like I drive to work bouncing of the rev-limiter all the way (much)

Some 'really interesting' comments on youtube
The stress the big ends take increases with revs, therefore it wont do the engine 'any good' per se.
I think it's also very fair to say a well engineered motor which is designed to rev (I'm thinking specifically 4 pot Honda V Tec's for car's and any bloody bike engine you care to mention) proves that exceeding the 'red-line' at 6k/7k is not the only or main determinant of engine life expectancy at all.
Either way, it's nothing to get excited over really is it
p.s. Why were you indicating 'on track' Neil

I've not, but Mechsympathy and I both want to test ours, and will at some point.

That I can match, and outrun the new 3.0l BMWs up to about 100/120mph, I think I've got something a little more powerful than the 190bhp stcock figure.
Either way, without revving its nuts off, it doesn't go so fast

ETA p.s. I'm obviously on track, at Brunters - cos I'd never break the speed limit, would I officer

Have you had any other performance modifications done to it or just the re-map?
I was seriously considering one as a daily driver...had seen a car I was interested in but then dilly-dallied too long about getting sorted to sell my E39 523i and the car I was interested in had gone! Serves me right!
As you say, if it really does go 'bang' it's not a total disaster on one of these now.

Its got a cone filter which has always been on there, and certainly I've never done anything to it, other than get everything sorted on it as and when it needed it, and shod it with decent Michelin Pilots Sport II tyres.I was seriously considering one as a daily driver...had seen a car I was interested in but then dilly-dallied too long about getting sorted to sell my E39 523i and the car I was interested in had gone! The previous owner traded it in for an E36 M3, and was a very keen fan of BMW - certainly I've had nothing untoward go wrong with it.
I've chuffed, and it does what I want from it - which is comfy and quiet, but fast and chuckable when required. Its also moved house for me, and takes the bikes whenever I need - so for £4000 and 35k miles in one years driving, I think she's a toughie

Never mind all that entertaining sliding about at VMax
too many people complained they had to try rather too hard at VMax to shake me off...
I'd have a another one like a shot tbh - an M car still seems to be rather too much of an extra to run for me...

Wow! you've done well and already had your money's worth!
Ta Wow! you've done well and already had your money's worth!
It costs nowt to run bar its usual consumables and bits that are wearing out - and its cheap to insure...
Never mind it sounds the daddy here and here
