Grrrr... Too many choices!

OK - Has anyone ever been able to come up with a reasonable estimation in the difference in performance between an "average" 4.0, an "average" 4.0HC, and "average" 4.5 and an "average" 5.0.
At the moment there's a couple of private sale 450's and 500's around that are at the higher end of the allowable toy budget and the possibility of a 4.0HC which would leave enough budget for doing up the kitchen *AND* the bathroom!
Just trying to get a handle on whether I'd be dissapointed with the performance of a 4.0HC against a 450 (haven't driven a 500 yet).

shpub : You *REALLY* need to get out more! Yoo much Star Trek can make you blind...
raceboy : Well at the moment I have a Vulva V40 1.9Tdi estate but I used to have a *REALLY* quick pre-cat 200SX Nissan that used to turn in 7mpg at times! I've driven some fairly "exotic" stuff in my time though - Countach, F550 Maranello, Rally prepped Lancia Stratos.
jeremyc : I can really relate to what you're saying and that's one of my worries.
fullchat : The 450 that I took out at Fernies at the weekend I actually got out of and thought "F*ck that was quick" - hadn't thought that in any of the ones I drove before.
Ghhhhaaaaarrrrr!
Maybe I should just buy another Volvo? Oh no - I *HAVE* to get a Tiv now coz I have two of Valhallas stickers that would go to waste otherwise!

Phil,
That sounds like the one then. When I was thinking upgrade from 4.0, I took a couple of 5l out for a drive and they felt no quicker than my 4.0GF. I think you can get some dogs but when you drive a good'n you know. It just feels right. (BTW I ended up with a Tuscan)

bob : Yeah - felt lovely but was over my budget and wifey's insisting that the kitchen and bathroom get done too (she's also hounding me for another sprog too )
Blue-V8-Thunder : Nope ... the stickers *WILL* be used!!!
Tonyrec : You must be chuffed as buggery - yer baby looks lovely in her new coat.
MikeyT : Dunno what you mean...

I might be being simplistic, but drive a few and try them and then decide. I came from 1.2 Clio to 4litres, and it is enough for me (For the time being), but I tried 12 before deciding, including a couple of HC and a very poor 4.5.

No that's what I would like to do but there is a limit to the amount of cars you can realistically try before Fernies get the hump and lob me out!
I'd love to get a few different ones "under the belt" but basically I don't like following up Chimps for sale unless I'm actually seriously contemplating it.

I think Raceboy has it: 'it kind of depends what your coming out of car wise, if you've not driven anything quick and RWD nothings going to disapoint and in 'real world' driving theres not that much real difference'.
You really do have to try it. Start with testdriving a 4.0 and if you're coming from an 'ordinary' car it will blow your socks off. Plus, you get some change, lower running costs and you can always upgrade later when you've got used to the power. You may find that a certain colour combination/condition clinches it over engine size.

You really need some time to explore the differences between the two. For weeks after upgrading I drove around with my tongue hanging out when the chances arose to open the throttle. Motorway speeds were where I noticed the differences most.
That said, even the first test drive in a 500 was a seat of the pants experience!
