Picked my Griff up from Dulfords yesterday and all running nice and sweet again.( apart from the wipers ( park switch )again rolleyes ) One of the valve springs had broken causing my problems.I did take it out for a gentle ride the weekend before it was booked in and my high end misfire turned into a complete and utter misfire going to what felt like running on eight to seven to six and then not many cylinders at all.And then it blew a manifold gasket aswell!!My wallet is substantially lighter as all springs were replaced and the manifold gaskets done again.Rear tyres,MOT, service and insurance all looming its looking like an expensive few months.

Coolio!
How long was that, six months or so? Glad you have it sorted now though Mat. I know what you mean about the bills coming in - I'm due the whole shebang; service, MOT, tax & insurance - grumpy

I can barely bring myself to talk about valve springs; I can feel a post traumatic episode coming on right now!

Any reason given for the breakage? Are they a recent install? New Cam?

New stealth cam about 5k ago fitted at Dulfords. Are Valve springs part of the kit? Dont know why one should break, quite rare apparently.Had to pay 200 odd quid for a new set anyway (ones from Real Steel as they are better than V8 Development ones allegedly)Car was quite tappety before the cam change but a lot of people reckoned a new cam would cure that.It didnt. It got worse and then a valve spring broke.Would weak valve springs cause a tappety noise??Anyway its sorted now. I guess your having problems with valve springs aswell then?

Hopefully it didn't cost much to replace the valve springs? The springs themselves would only be £30-£40, and I wouldn't have thought it would be more than a couple of hours work to replace them.

According to my bill...1x valve spring set...£177+ Vat=£207.98eek
Is a valve spring set just springs or is there something else?
My total bill was nearly £800 as I had the exhaust manifold gaskets done yet again.
11.5 hrs labour for the job lot (£540.50inc vat)+ about £50 for gaskets/ bolts etc.

Probably Kent springs at that price. Didn't have any problems with those when I put the 404 cam in the last motor. The new motor (404 again) has gotten through two sets of springs; eight broken on the second batch. Kent springs in there at the moment which are hopefully holding up. God only knows who made the previous items; I think they musta come in a box with blue lines and T E S C O written on it.

I'm not surprised a miss-fire was being chased; I'd exhausted my fuel/ignition diagnosis.

Those numbers all sounds very high to me, but I'm not the one trying to make a living at it.

I don't see why they'd pay more than about £40 for a set of valve springs (£80 for doubles, £120 for triples) plus maybe a few quid for rocker cover gaskets if you beggar one of those up along the way. Bolts/gaskets for £50 isn't unreasonable but I'd expect a professional fitter to replace the springs in 2-3 hours and about the same for the gaskets. If you're hamfisted like me it'd take all day with plenty of coffee breaks but 12 hours for a pro does seem kind of generous unless something went wrong along the way.

What would the warranty on something like valve springs be?

Surmising here, but if you had a new cam kit fitted 5,000 mile and less than a year ago, then you'd expect the springs to last far longer than they have. If they haven't, for one reason or another, then surely you shouldn't have to pay for a new set and/or their replacement confused.
