Bloody starter motor
Discussion
After trying to remove the starter my AJP engine after reading threads on here about it being relatively easy I gave up and insteadtried the solenoid part, in case that was all that was the problem. It appears that it was as the engine will crank if I press the pin in te solenoid in. However I now find it is next to impossible to rebuild the thing in situ. Add to that the fact that I cant seem to remember if the spring pat goes behind or in front of the engaging pin. Can anybody tell me how these are supposed to fit back together whilst in situ, or does the starter have to come out.
There are plenty of threads on getting the starter out which I'm sure you've read but I think you are going to need to get it out to refit the solonid. I took the solonoid of my Tilton on the bench and that was a little tricky to get back together so I'd say nigh on impossible to do in situ.
I'm pretty sure that the spring goes in front of the lever, the bottom pic may explain a little more. I.e, to push the lever back (away from you) when the solonoid piston is drawn into the housing, i.e toward you. Sorry of a little vague it's been a while since I did it.

.
What's making it difficult to get the starter out? I've done it a few times so may be able to offer some advice.
Cheers

I'm struggling with getting evrything out of the way to give a large enough hole to fit the starter through. I've removed the throttle linkage and the first two intakes, but there is still a mass of wires and hoses in the way. I don't know if it's more awkward because it's a 5ltr engine, although I should think it's the same as a 4.5 in dmensions etc.
Anyway I've given up for today ss it's getting dark now and my arm hurts from rubbing against stuff.

Sounds familiar! Most of the wiring and piping on the bulkhead is just cable tied in place or together. I snipped most of them away which allowed me to move a lot of the plumbing far enough to give enough access. You don't say if you've removed the fuel rail. I know some can do it with it in place but no tme I'm afraid.

you can defo get it out with out moving the fuel rail as i have done it on mine (about a year or two ago now!)
from what i can remember is its a real squeeze and u have to cut all the cable ties holding the pipers etc and then pull them across, the starteer will then fit out of the gap! its tricky but can be done! need someone with skinny arms and small hands!
