There's normally a "I can't make the website work" thread by now? Have they finally got it working well or are we just more organised this year?

I've just done most of mine, except for the second bleeding year running I can't find my P60 - I know I had it, I know I put all "tax" related stuff in one place but can I pigging find it? No! I've got last years (that I couldn't find last year!) but no sign of this years.....

That means I've got to bother the poor woman at work who is already likely to be inundated with the stupid people like me who need info from her NOW because they've left their return until the last two weeks!

(actually I regard this as quite early biggrin)

I'm using the on-line facility for the first time this years and so far (touch wood) it's mainly working OK.

I don't use the Revenue's system but my own special practice software which links to the Revenue's system and uploads the data.

I quite like the online system (the one for the great unwashed biggrin ) it's nice and straightforward. It would be better if it recalled more information from last year to avoid having to input the same info each year. It retains some (name/address/tax no's etc.) but strangely not my date of birth. Remembering employers details would be helpful but I guess it doesn't take much time to type them in.

I'm just struggling through my accounts now...frown

Hmmm should have, I'll have to dig - I guess that's got the final figures on it as well? Didn't think of that!

Pay attention to your PAYE Coding as well. If it was 503L, then there should be no problems. If it was anything else you need to enter the additional details on the tax return in the relevant boxes.

Hmm it's other than 503L which I think reflects the BUPA cover the firm pays for and I pay tax on the benefit.

I've found the payslip so it's given me figures to put in for the moment, I'll grovel to the accounts lady on Monday for full figures.

At some point in the year you would have received a detailed Notice of Coding which would have explained the final coding in operation at 5 April 2007 (as shown on your P60).
If you are receiving a Medical Insurance Benefit in Kind, the Coding for 2006/07 will have been reduced by this amount. However, the 2006/07 Coding will probably show the BUPA BIK you received in 2005/06 as the Revenue get that figure from the previous year's P11d as supplied by your employer back in July 2006.
When you are completing the Benefits section of your own Self Assessment return, YOU need to enter the value of the BUPA amount you actually received for the year 2006/07. You should be able to obtain this from the copy of the P11d for 2006/07 supplied to you by your employer back in July 2007.

I've completed mine but have to go back and revisit several bits as I'm not sure on a few things (class 4 NI as I have a PAYE job aswell).

May I take this opportunity to 'boil' with regards to money on the account for the next year. How on earth, in this reality this is even remotely sane I just don't know. Trying my best not to explode.

If you think your 2007/08 Self Assessment tax liability is going to be lower than it is for 2006/07, you can apply to have the two 2007/08 Payments on Account reduced. They can be reduced to "Nil" if appropriate.

The application can be made on the face of the 2006/07 Self Assessment return or on a special form calles an SA303.

If it does collapse, I'll be sending the boys round smile

The Government should ensure that their systems are robust enough to cope with their own regulations and requirements.
The law says that returns can be filed right up to midnight on 31 January. By law, their systems should be capable of allowing taxpayers fulfill their legal duties within the legally allotted time limits.

Too late, trying to submit mine but it just sits there after I press the submit button rolleyes

Obviously if I was paranoid Id say it was on purpose, like the we don't have any technical advisers, luckily a very nice Scottish lass gave me the info I needed who wasn't a 'technical' adviser; all a ploy to make you late and get those fines in... kERRRRRCHING!

But obviously I wouldn't be that paranoid wink

Hoping that by the time Ive written this and posted it, it magically goes through...

I got my last two returns submitted by mid afternoon yesterday.

I wonder is it just the Revenue's own package which is causing the problem.

I don't actually use the Revenue's own "On-Line Gateway". I use a professional package (which I've used for years) which then grabs all the tax data entered from the client and sends it off, with appropriate back-up schedules and attachments, to the Revenue electronicay.

Confirmation of receipt is usually verified within a few minutes.

I must say that, by and large, I've had very few problems.

I sent mine last Sunday (look at me being organised cool )and it was fine, other than the small panic about the password at the end.

I usually struggle to remember the password each year so I made sure that I've stored it and the userid on my PC but of course it doesn't show the password just ***, I very smugly pushed the "yes I really really want to submit" button and got a "confirm password" box eek, through some fluke I managed it on the third attempt!

I've got the normal scenario where the system says they owe me money, they'll pay it back to me and will then at a later date tell me it was wrong and ask for it back again rolleyes it seems to be related to the tax on medical benefit, it has been adjusted through my taxcode and I put the details into the system where requested, but it seems to throw the system, so they pay me back around £40 and then I pay it back to them - it works OK though!

Benefits in Kind, PAYE Codings and Self Assessment are uneasy bedfellows - in fact they are almost mutually incompatible.

For 2007/08 (the current tax year) your 2007/08 PAYE Coding will be adjusted for any BIKs you receive but the values will be based on the information provided by your employer on the P11d submitted by him showing BIK details for 2006/07. There is no mechanism in the UK tax system which allows the Revenue to know exactly what your CURRENT year BIK amounts are and they have to go on the information on their system from the previous tax year.

The one exception is company cars. Because they are usually the biggest and most significant BIKs that an employee might receive, it was decided that relying on last tax year's data was too crude a method. To solve the problem they invented a new form (the P46-Car) which employers are supposed to submit showing any changes to employee/director company cars DURING the relevant tax year. This should enable the Revenue to adjust your CURRENT tax code to take into account the correct BIK on the car you are CURRENTLY using.

However, I have come across many examples of employers who never complete these P46-Car forms (it is an offence to fail to complete this form if there are changes to the cars during the tax year) and instead rely solely on the P11D for notifying the Revenue.

The other BIK related coding problem I come across is when an employee leaves a job where they had BIKs and they move to a new job with different or no BIKs. Invariably, that employee will pay the wrong PAYE tax in their new employment because the BIK adjustment on their coding will still relate to the situation in their old employment.
The real problem is that there is too much of a time-lag in updating codings.

..this used to do my head in - Fuel card.. always resulting in a heafty K code and always out of date - even when I told them in advance something along the lines of 'look I've already reached that value...it's Spetember and I don't want to owe you a pile of cash as a lump sum..can you not adjust it for me now?' Somehow they never managed to get their act together enough to do so.

Thanks Eric that's a useful explanation. As mine is never a huge amout I just let them go through the process of refunding and then me repaying! It seems to keep them happy and that's all that matters!
