orange ABS light in quattro...

I noticed the ABS light in my Ur Quattro
In my case the rear diff lock had engaged and locked on which automatically disables the ABS. I didnt notice the green diff light down in front of the gearstick, just the obvious orange dash light.
I soon noticed something else was wrong when I made tight turns and got some grumbling noises from the drivetrain.
Just needed 5 minutes with a ramp, hammer and WD40 to sort it

Do you have a green diff lock light and is it on?
Id check this is the cause of your ABS light before messing with the diff.
If so, go underneath and you will see a pneumatic cylinder sticking out from the side of the diff with 2 lines to it.
They stick becuase you rarely use them. Mine released the firt time when I hit a sleeping policeman a bit too hard. The second time I went under and lubricated the cylinder. A few gentle taps with the hammer and 20 or so activations of the switch and all was well. I then activated the diff lock once a week to prevent it sticking again.
I heard of one other owner who has the same symptom but his was caused by the vacuum pipe going to aforementioned cylinder being damaged so the cylinder couldnt withdraw, leaving the diff lock permanently on.
No simple answer im afraid. Main thing is to get it checked out.You dont want the diff lock on permanently. Although the transmission is tough it will wear, youve got no ABS and the handling can be interesting.
