Theres a coiled one inside the steering wheel ( which you have to remove the s/wheel to get at , which uncoils itself and falls all over!! ), which is the normal one to break , replacement is the only solution ( £20- ).
But worth checking under-dash , theres a few connections that follow the column down , from behind the wheel. Also try banging the rim of the wheel to see if it's just a loose/dry connection ! (worked for me recently !).

Is the centre bolt the only one that needs to be undone, what about the four around it as mine seems to not want to come off.

Not sure if this will help but i had problems with the indicators not turning off and the fault was the steering wheel control box under the dashboard. Mine had warped with heat and had corrosion on two of the pin connectors. Worth having a look can get lots of parts from bell hill garage in bath give them a call very helpful people.

Yes it is - Sounds like you need a new Ribbon cable, rey Clever Trevor.
