Anyone any idea what size A/F allen key is required to remove the plug from the diff to top up the oil - mines an S3 so an MT75 box and diff. (?)
Also, is the gearbox oil level plug the same ?
I'll no doubt figure it out tomorrow but it would be good to know ahead wink

My S3 has a type 9 box with a 8mm hex plug. Is it really a MT75 box? They're the ones with the integral ribbed bell housing.

Can't remember what size plug is on the diff though.

Hi Jed and thanks for the quick reply... 8mm eh ? I think I should have one of those OK cheers. I added the (?) because I have been reading the bible (first edition) and the Haynes for the Sierra V6 and think I have figured out its an MT75, but could be wrong...

Maybe the Diff plug will be 8mm too ?

I'll know tomorrow eh? rolleyes

I'm sure my bible says type 9 is standard and the MT75 is the exception

Kevin - I'm pretty sure the sierra went MT75 with the 2.9 engine but TVR stuck with the older type 9 gearbox as it had slightly lower ratios to give better acceleration, and we all want some of that!

Hi Chris

you are probably right on that, I was skimming through the details as I was just looking for the position of the Oil Fill plugs what the level required was and hoping to find the allen key size before I started...
In my Bible on page 95 there is a table which shows the 2.9 as an MT75 and the narrative on the page backs that up. In my Sierra Haynes in the 2.9 supplement it also states that in early 1989 the MT75 was introduced, to replace the N3 box.

I have seen the discussions on this forum about types of box but have not needed to know which mine was so far. It just shows how easy it is to be misled. I suppose there is a number somewhere on the castings to confirm what I have, but hopefully, I will not actually need to know for a while.

cheers

AFAIK the MT75 Ford gearbox was never fitted to a V6 S series. I think that TVR may have planned to do this, but (like so many things) never actually did, although it is possible that someone somewhere may have carried out this conversion. AFAIK they all left the factory with the Type 9 (aka Type N).
