Coming up dual carriageway on A4 out of Bath, good visibilty. Scamera thief on other side of dual carriageway, back open facing up hill (away from me). Speed limit is 50 (why?). Saw it and dismissed it, anyway two weeks pass and NIP arrives at work.

The scamera thieves had only used the laser through the front windscreen of the van across the dual carriageway and got me.

Is this complete deception or what? It transpires that Avon and Somerset police have now changed their policy.

Does anyone know the protocol on this abuse and sneaky way of trapping motorists.

Also, be warned, the van can get you both ways. Safety - my arse!

Probably took you roughly from behind. No wonder you feel shafted.

From what ive read, theyre NOT supposed to use it across the lanes of a carriageway.
NOR from behind a windscreen.
Ive made it policy to carry a camera in the car at all times now, to snap these bastards. In my short experience, they dont like being photod themselves, but are more than happy to disregard the guidelines and do what they like.
Theives operate in this area, DONT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! Take pictures and publicise this scam. Its one way of fighting back!

I have seen a print out of the video evidence - they clearly took me through the front of the vehicle.

How can this be publicised further??

Have you got the pictures and arre you sure they got you through the windscreen? IIRC the LTI 20-20 laser gun used by many scamera teams is not approved for use through glass, although some guns from other manufacturers are.

It might be worth finding out which type of gun they used, and if they did get you through the windscreen find out if that gun is approved for through-glass use.

Phone David Gledhill at the Bath Evening Chronicle. He'll be interested.

I was done at exactly the same place about 6 months ago. I am pretty sure that the dual carriageway used to change from 50 to NSL about halfway up the hill. As I discovered to my cost it is now 50 the whole way. I was overtaking a long line of crawling HGVs so had to put my foot down and was clocked by the Talivan scum at 74 just before the road narrows into single carriageway. NIP arrived a week or two later.

The van was facing up the hill and they were filming accross the carriageway from the back of the van.

Must admit that if I saw a scamera van my auomatic reaction would be to check I was within the limit, whether I thought it could get me or not. Although I suspect that in many instances the scamera will get you before you slow down.

The simple fact is that the more and more people who are done by these scameras the more and more people that are going to be aggreived.

The real problem is that in many cases they are on main roads, not residential roads, and are therefore catching high mileage drivers, who often need a licence for work, and who often are actually more aware of what they are doing, than an aged numpty, or a parent with a screaming child on the back seat.

Funny this - the only scamera vans I've ever seen, all operate where limits suddenly drop, and/or where it is perfectly safe to go fast! NEVER seen one in a residential area. How can this be right?

Laser shouldn't be operated through glass by the way - you get defraction & all sorts of errors. Should be possible to argue that point in court.
