Advice please. Does anyone own an Aprilia RSV R of 2004 vintage?
I am considering buying one and although I know a thing or two about bikes, I would appreciate somebody's first hand experience.
Thanks in advance.

My cousin's got the 2004 milli or factory. well the all singing top spec one. I love it and would have one myself. He bought it new then sold it and after 18 months needed to buy it back as he was soo impressed with it,

So can't help much but looks and seems to be a great bike. most of the reviews I have read in the mag's rate them very highly

Similar thing with a friend of mine. He bought it off of a friend. The friend then bought it back off him after about a year, and my friend considered buying it back again!! So they both loved it. The electrics were a bit dodgy on his (speedo often didn't work), but that didn't put him off.

As said above, magazines do like them even though they are not the fastest. I think this is the last year of production, so should start to pick up a few bargains (as if a 2005 Factory isn't already a bargain at £6,000!!). The only thing that stopped me buying one was because I wanted a new model to show off with!

rsv gone!

This is deceptive. There is huge torque available from very few revs. They just launch forward.

Overall performance might not look much better than a 600 on paper, when you looked at quarter mile times but on the road, the ability to overtake anything at a whim makes them much quicker than 600s.

They do lack the high rev rush of an IL4 though.

Electrics are not known to be a problem. The only gremlins I suffered were down to my Datatool alarm.

Visordown have a forum for them; "A forum to talk about the awesome Aprilia RSV Mille."

KIWI_UK has this very bike (RSV Factory), and knows it inside out....he practically re-builds it most weekends!" I'll give him a call and tell him to get on here.

Cheers.

Common problems are the charging circuit (wires from the rectifier to the battery are too thin), warped front discs (suspect this might be people being lazy and holding the brake on not releasing it), air getting in the rear brake and a shite side stand. Nail the rectifier wiring issue, swap the sidestand for the US variant and swap the battery if needed. Replacement discs are dear, so check for pulsing through the brake lever before you buy. Build quality in general is good though, so if kiwi_uk rebuilds his bike weekly, it'll be because he wants to not needs to. (Or he's bleeding the rear brake again!)

Steve.

ETA: www.apriliaforum.com is a mine of useful info and a possible source of a US spec sidestand.

Steve has basically hit the nail on the head. Rear Brake is an issue but there are fixes for that. Air can also get in to the clutch system after 2,000 miles or so but this was only aon a few bikes. Mine did not suffer this issue but I went for an after market clutch slave cylinder which lightened the clutch and it looks cool to! biggrin

I track day mine as well as tour abroad hence the reason I'm working on her quite a bit. I'm at 25,000 miles now and I've not had any issues engine wise.

I say go for it, the grin factor is well worth it.

Funnily enough the one that I am considering has a soft clutch - first inch or so is slack, making it seem that air is in the system.
Slight correction guys, I refer to the R, not the Factory, which of course had radial front brakes, Ohlins etc. Being a lesser spec, I guess the R is easier to live with. Having said that, I have lived with an SP5 and currently own a 1980 Spada, so I am used to recalcitrant motorcyles!
Really appreciate all the help.

Forgot about the clutch slave - I got the MPL one off ebay and I agree it's much better.

Yes the swing was recalled about two years ago. Design fault meant the swing arm was prone to cracking although I've only heard of one case in the UK where this has happened. Another source of good informations is http://www.apriliaforum.com

It doesn't matter whether you buy the Factory or the R most of the issues are related to both bikes. The engine performance is exactly the same. I've ridden my mates 05 R and it does handle differently to mine and we've both had our suspension setup by Darren at MC Technics in Stowmarket (plug over) smile.

Np prob for the info mate. That's what we're all here for. Glad Chilli gave me the heads up, really love my Factory, it has soul and a personality which I wouldn't part with.

It might be air in the master cylinder. There should be a bleed nipple to get rid.
