Parallels is certainly recommended. But actually not essential. Parallels is really for when you want to run Windows at the same time as the Mac OS. If you don't especially need to do that, then you likely only need to install Windows on your Macbook with the help of Apples free/bundled bootcamp software. This makes Windows very easy to install on a Mac. So you choose which OS to boot into. Parallels is merely optional
