Motorist clocked at 116mph in 40mph zone

A motorist is to be prosecuted for speeding and dangerous driving after being clocked travelling at 116mph in an urban street with a 40mph limit.
The unnamed driver is one of more than 60 motorists caught exceeding the speed limit in Thorns Road, Quarry Bank, near Dudley, West Midlands, in recent weeks.
Sergeant Karl Androlia, from the road policing unit at Halesowen, says police mounted the crackdown in the area after complaints from residents.
He said: "A total of 65 motorists were caught exceeding the speed limit - some of them were driving in excess of 100mph.
"The highest recorded speed was 116mph and the drivers have received a notice of intended prosecution.
"Those travelling at the highest speeds have also been sent notices of prosecution for dangerous driving.
He added: "We will vigorously enforce the speed limit with whatever means are at our disposal. Many of the fatal and serious road accidents in the West Midlands are caused by speeding drivers."

Houses all around .. that looks like a traffic light controlled crossroads .. if this guy was doing 116 on it then he deserves a long, long ban.

funny, round here, a lot of NSL has been reclassified as 30 or 40. Where we used to do 80 without too much fear of a nicking, you can't do 45 'cos of some pratt looking at a map & drawing on it.
So.. 116. Maybe it used to be a 70 once upon a time. Well, I do the odd 116 on the motorway, and don't feel too much guilt. It's all numbers aftr all.

Have you also noticed that re-classified roads also suffer from less maintenance - painting the edge lines further in instead of cutting back the verges - less hedge clearing, poorer sitelines, more potholes etc. certainly seems to be the way here (hampshire / dorset) with many of the roads becoming more dangerous as a result,

Isn't that the problem and what annoys us so much? The accident figures are there, and we all know excessive speed
causes accidents. So therefore we can assume the accidents are caused by people exceeding the speed limit. So the solution those in charge adopt is to reduce the speed limit, and install cameras to monitor it. Why not leave the speed limit as it was and install cameras to monitor it? Ah I forgot that won't generate so much revenue. However the fact that roads are suddenly reclassified and then cameras installed just gives the impression that they don't care about safety only revenue.
well, if the bikers got a 28day jail sentence for 150 in a 70 zone, these guys are fecked...!
Mind you - my rules of the road that i try and live by are:
30mph in all 30mph limits (they are usually there for a reason) - sometimes lower - eg school kicking out time or whatever....
40mph try and stick to, but occasionally you can weedle a bit more if careful DEPENDING on where it is, becasue they are often going out of built up areas etc.
60/70mph just advisory!
Whilst i could see me doing 150mph on a dual carriageway, i could never see me doing 116 in a 40mph. Would feel very uncomfortable i think.
Mind you not really judging because don't know any background. Would be interested to see how the press pick this one up however.
150mph was a nice sensationalist number, 116 doesn't sound nearly as bad, but if we are talkig built up area versus open dual carriageway - which is the worst offence i ask you...? This is my arguement about speed and just plain bad driving.

Road not too many miles away from West Midlands.
Was a semi rural 40 which some might say was too slow.
Would agree to that sentiment in odd stretches but IMHO it was about right overall.
They turned it into a 30 and made a right member erectus of the legal process in doing it.
Anyway in discussion with the council as to why, who etc, the road safety officer knew nothing, and I mean NOTHING about the changes. Neither did local traff plod. Shouldn't these be the guys MOST involved?
The road safety guy looked at his accident database and his comments are quoted verbatim "I only have one serious accident reported on this whole stretch, and that was two joyriders who crashed whilst being pursued. I suppose one could say that this accident is speed related but I think it's stretching the point a bit far, don't you?"
My own county has just set up a "safety camera" unit. The stated and minuted target of the unit?
Reduce accidents?......... nope.
Reduce speeding?.......... nope.
Raise £7 million quid a year?........ yepp you got it!
That should tell us everything!
