A bit weird this one, but follow the thought pattern.....

I've just been to get a Tea from the cafe below, whilst in the queue, I'm looking at the cakes yum

Fruit
Honey & Walnut
Lemon
Coconut
Carrot
Chocolate & Beetroot

and my brain went yikeshurl

Now who comes up with these mixtures?

Who first thinks "Ooohh I wonder what carrot will taste like in a cake" "I wonder what beetroot and chocolate will be like"?

And who invented cake anyway? And how? Who had the idea to mix sugar and butter together, then beat some eggs into it and then gently fold flour into the mixture?

So - the real question, that you can actually answer is this - What is the strangest cake ingredients combination you have seen/tasted?

tried chocolate & beetroot cake, it's really quite nice, as is carrot cake. Both carrots and beetroot have a sweet taste for a vegetable.

Then again, maybe I just like cake too much wink

A friend of mines, mother, used to make a chocolate cake using mayonaise.

A bit odd you would have thought, but it makes the sponge moist, some people use yogurt instead.

However if you leave it out then the cake goes like biscuit.

CAn I just be smug here, I have a chocolate cooling downstairs ready for a friend's birthday - it's going to be a black forest gateau and it smells and looks furking lovely! (I do however wish I'd kept me drunken trap shut when I agreed to make it as I still have to decorate it and it may not be pweddy at the end....)

Just read yesterday a recipe for cake with parsnips. Presumably, like carrot, once its cooked it very moist and sweet. Bet sweet potato has featured in a cake before as thats the same when cooked.

Beetroot and chocolate cake: bliss! Especially the National Trust's one.

I lurve de cake!
