Well my search for a new car keeps taking me upward and after watching Fifth Gear last night, out of curiosity, I looked at how much a new shape M5 costs on the second hand market. I was pleasantly surprised but I am wondering if anybody can help in terms of the running costs this car will at up. Petrol is not a problem as i do very few miles per year but more in terms of servicing.

Thanks

If ya have to ask then you can't afford it! (no offence intended here). Don't go into MPower ownsership unless you are prepared to handle big bills. Not that they are unreliable but if the do break it costs!

Everything is relative.

If you are happy to spend £40K+ on a car, then running costs shouldn't be too much of a burden.

At least if you are buying used, your depreciation is going to be much lower which tends to be the biggest cost by far on most new and nearly new cars.

Apart from petrol and depreciation, the running costs of an in-warranty E60 M5 are not too bad.

If you ask then you are doing your research well. Nothing to do with being able to afford it.

"In Warranty" being the key point.

If you're buying an early car the warranty will be up around May this year, and I would budget for extending this through BMW (£1050 if under 60,000 miles, £1860 if over) and continuing to extend it every year.

I can't speak for the E60, but I've always found routine servicing, minor repairs, replacement of consumables ect on the E39 to be quite reasonable considering the type of car. It's if something major goes wrong you have potential to be bankrupted, hence the warranty.

Fuel, tyres, brakes, servicing are what these cars like to eat heavily-you then have to account for a possible failure which could occur ie diff,box,engine-have a couple of grand stashed...

These issues are not relative after you've driven one..

I do about 1,000 a week in my E60 and I'm still standing (just!).

Actually, they're not too bad.
It only averages 18.5mpg in mixed driving, and yes, the depreciation is hideous.
Servicing though is actually cheaper than my old E46 M6 (I use Oxford BMW who I guess aren't especially cheap).
On the mileage I do, it needs servicing about every 4 months (two so far).
Tyres are £850 a set if you shop around and play suppliers off against each other.
They last quite well though if you do lots of motorway miles.

I agree with the point on the warranty though. A couple of fairly minor things have gone wrong.I bet if I was paying myself they'd cost a fortune though.

eek

That's about 7 times my mileage! I'm only just coming up for the first service, having had the car 22 months from new.

Can you really extend the warranty on the M5 for £1k? I thought it was much more

Hi Rav,

How do you manage to get 18.5 mpg?? I can only get 12-13 ave, and possibly 16 on the motorway!
