Excessive in the extreme - although I do think that 50mph is too low for some parts of the A406, at some times of the day. I think the driver should be banned for a minimum of a year, made to retake their licence, fined heavily and possibly forced to ride a moped for 12 months after regaining legal status. But not sent to prison.

I don't know the section of road so can't comment constructively. Was it a maintained speed or just a blip between junctions with any footpaths etc fenced off.

Have you considered excess braking?

Think the guy must be a complete idiot. No getting away from that, and would agree with Mon Ami Mate, lost licence (potentially more than one year), big fine, but not jail.

Would note however, that the North Circular is a very long road from East London, where there are some pretty open bits of three lane (in each direction) dual carriageway, basically motorways; all the way around darkest north London, to the West where there are some sections of single lane sections (from memory). Without knowing the piece of road it is difficult to put it in real context.

Seconded.

Allthough I find it hard to believe that speed is possible on that road especially between A10 and Hangar lane!

Dont forget that losing your licence usualy means losing your job! whic in my opinion is a punishment out of proportion to the crime. he may also have dependants who will also be punished.

In the case of speeding I belive a large fine and comunity service on his days off would be of more benefit

Just my opinion

Why have the re-take? It's not as if the driving test has much relevance to "normal" driving. All it would do is lenghten the driver's ban until they could arrange a retest.

Do you think you could pass a driving test if you were told to do one tomorrow? The A406 is not an empty motorway but a busy route through many towns and intersections. Perhaps doing an advanced driving course therefore being able to realise all the potential dangers on such a road should suffice!

Completely agree about the advanced driving course. That would be the best option for EVERYONE regardless of if they've been caught at 136 or not.

Re the driving test. They are totally irrelevant. To pass all you need to do is drive smoothly 2mph under the limit unless there are hazards in which case slow down a bit. Accelerate and brake gently. Use your mirrors all the time. Appear to be observing everything around you. It's not hard to drive like that. I've done two tests. Passed the first with 7 minors after doing about twenty hours practice. Got six points in 18 months and had to retake. Passed with 1 minor. I'm not a good driver but I passed the test with ease. All it meant for me to do the retake was that I had to use trams and trains to get the 20 miles to work. Average journey time? 2 hours compared to 35 minutes in the car. And at 4 times the price.

It was on the approach to Hanger Lane, around the slightly twisty bit opposite the Ace Cafe.

Hes just lucky that due to the time of day there was not the normal tailback of stationary traffic.

Having driven along there at speed many many times and at all times of day and night i can say that he would have been driving by the seat of his pants and would not have had enough vision as he both entered and exited the 'mini' underpasses.

All in all he was very lucky!

As "speed kills" shouldn't he be charged with attempted murder?

Seriously though, I'd go with the concensus - 12 month ban minimum, humungeous fine and a test re-take.

If I was made transport minister tomorrow I'd bring in a graduated licencing system. This would demand more intensive training and minimum age qualification for cars of greater power to weight ratio (similar to the bike system). The trade off would be higher speed entitlement on motorways and main arterial A roads. And if you get caught doing 136mph in a 50mph limit you lose your super licence. For ever.

As a matter of interest, how do you know he was doing 136? You might be doing him a disservice. He might have really be going for it and be going really fast!

All he has to do is not sign the NIP.
