Before taking the Griff to have the paintwork done now seems the right time to adjust the door alignment. The hinge pins are fine but the gap between the rear of the door and the slam panel is too small. The Bible recommends a dealer does this but someone must have attempted it at home. Cant find any old threads so any advise would be helpful. Also, anyone able to tell me how the Griff / Chim doors are checked when opening I.E. where are the check straps?

No check straps. The doors are stopped by a rubber pad on the sill which the inner forward edge of the door butts up against. Adjustment is via slotted holes in the hinge mount plates. You can also adjust vertical position by screwing/unscrewing top and bottom hinge 'pins' (which are actually just bolts!). Beware though that adjusting the door may necessitate adjustment of the catch.

Which direction can the door be adjusted using the slotted holes in the hinge mount plates?

Thanks for the advice, I see the rubber pads that act as door check straps now I've had a look at the drivers side - the passenger side ones are missing! The adjustment I wanted to make to both doors was to:
A. Move them forward to increase the gap against the slam panel - not possible as the front of the doors are already very close to the front inner wings. Seems the car has shrunk or the doors have always been tight to the point of chipping paint when closing them. A couple of mm removed from the trailing edge seems the only solution.
B. Move the bottom of the door inwards as the top trailing edge is nice and flush with the rear wings when it's closed, but the bottom trailing edge is 2-3m proud - no adjustment possible as the gap between the bottom of the door and the sill is a consistant 3mm.
I guess this is normal on Griffs which I'm happy to accept, I'm just used to panel fit on 60's/70's steel bodied cars or 70's/80's GRP Lotus.
The exercise has allowed me to correct the door frame fit on the drivers side which can never have been right as I had to make a new bracket to get the adjustment right.

My 97 Griff has exactly the same problem as yours slightly out on the bottom of the drivers door perfect at the top , there is no interference though , I have had the car 5 years and certainly when I got it the fit lines were perfect . Ive checked for adjustment and found none.
The door shuts smoothly as well
