hehe The normal engine for those kits is the Toyota 3S-GE, usually in 170bhp form but often tuned to 200+ (or BEAMS with 200 stock), power delivery must be a bit more intense with a turbo though!

The SR20 and SR20DET engines are very common and very cheap over here in Aus and I should imagine its the same in New Zealand with the number of imports they have.

The emissions regs on a kit car are much stricter here in Aus so you have to be a bit sneaky to get one on the road with an SR20/DET but I think its a lot easier in NZ.

Last time I looked you have to meet new car emissions regs here in aus...including noise emissions. The SR20 and SR20DET fail miserably.

The Toyota 4AGE 20 valve is the engine of choice here or for those with money its the Ford Duratec or Toyota 2ZZGE from the Corrolla Sportivo.

yes I don't think the SR20 motors meet our new emissions regs (brought in from start of this year) either, so you can't import Jap 200SX/Silvias anymore (S15s may be possible still but I don't think so). But should still be able to build and cert Kits with the engines as they're already in the country.

hehehe weird rules....

You can import S13 and S15 Silvias/180SX/200SX thingoes here no problems. The roads are covered in the things and there are more of them coming in all the time but then you cant use the engine for a kit car!!

I believe the kit car regs here basically state that its a new car so therefore it must meet new car emissions regs frown

Pretty bloody silly really because the number of kit cars on the road here can be measured in the hundreds and driven rarely. The kit scene here is strangled by the government regs.
