Shall i trade in the Elise SRacer for an Exige?
Discussion
Hi All
I am in a bit of a quandry
Had the Elise for 2 years and have had so much pleasure owning it however as much as i enjoy the blats out at the weekend i feel i have missed the point a bit. my toughts are that i drive the car only at weekends and if its reasonably dry and always at the back of my mind are the Rozzers scamrers ,Speed limit the odd idiot etc but have never taken it to a track. I have my first tarck day booked , be it in a borrowed S1 but i want to develop my skills and learn to drive the car as it was designed for. (with me so far)
So do i trade in the Elise for an 2nd hand exige , been offered 20k for the elise by dealer (could sell privately) buy a more track modded Elise or an N/A Exige?
I know there is a huge community out there on the track front and tonnes of advise etc. i think i know the answer...........
ON the exige what should i look for in terms of a good starter package which i could develop as i hopefully will do?
Thanks All

As asked before... you haven't mentioned whether its an S1 or S2 exige or modded elise you are thinking of.
If you want to take some cash out of the deal, selling your SR and buying a more track biased S1 elise is no bad idea...you will lose very little (if anything) in terms of of outright performance.
If you want an S1 exige, unless you manage to find a real snotter, you'll have a bit of money to put in the upgrade/repair pot, but you'll have to bear in mind it'll be a 7-8 year old car and things will need to be repaired/replaced.
If you are thinking about an S2 N/A exige... I'd stick with you SR and put the money that you are prepared to pay to change cars in an upgrade fund... brakes, suspension, toe links etc. I reckon you'll probably get better value for money upgrading your own car than selling and buying a second. Irrespective of the lotus marketing spin (elise everyday sports car, exige hard-core track day car), the difference between the two on track, in the hands of gentleman amateurs, isn't really noticeable.
I'd get your SR out on track ASAP and find out what your missing. After a few trackdays, ifyou get the bug, only then do you need to start thinking about whether you want to spend any of that cash on upgrades.

Get yourself down to http://www.silverstoneperformance.biz/ and get an SP-K fitted - I'm sure you'll save some money and will have a more potent car than an Exige S to boot!

Thanks
HMMM Personal choice, But you will take a big hit.
All you will get is slightly better suspension set up and tyres. (But the rear tyres will only last 4000 max and cost £ 166 each )
It would be cheaper to get a set of nitrons and a spare set of wheels and Tyres.
But I would recommend the ecu upgrade

One thing if you look at Exiges, don't worry about any of the 'packs' and buy on condition. You can always fit a harness bar and use the touring seats, or if you really wanted to fit sports seats at a later date.
Too many people think the Sports pack is only way to go, to be honest I'm happy with my Touring interior and I'm the kinda person who would usually go for the Sports. I figured the money I saved could buy me the bits to make my car into a Sports Pack car and still have the rest of the interior features I like from the Touring Pack.

I think the use what you've got route and upgrade as you need is probably the best route. Bear in mind the financial hit you're going to take trading in a two year old car.
I've no idea how good your driving skills are but if you've not tracked a car before then it will take a while before you can get the best from what you've got.
The S1 route is also worth thinking about as you could get a Honda powered S1 with the money from the cash you'd get on selling your current car. That would have super-car rivalling performance. Alternatively just get a boggo S1 for 8-9k and start tracking that. You won't worry so much about slip-ups etc as its a whole lot less money if anything goes wrong!
Building up an S1 is the route I've taken by accident. I origianlly got my car to see if I could handle the Elise thing with the idea of upgrading to an S2. Problem is I fell in love with my little car. So I've made some cosmetic/practical improvements and improved the brakes. I've recently started tracking the car and have had a ball. I've just bought some Nitrons which are going on, complete with a whole suspension refresh. Once I've got that lot going properly then I'll think about some power. 160bhp from the K is safe and will give you a car pretty much as fast as the 111R.

Track your existing car and follow investment plan here;

Once you have done that lot your car will be faster than an S2 Exige simply based on less weight and drag. Fact.

as its already been said the only difference between an S2 Exige and a Sports Racer is the clam, suspension & tyres. Whats the point? You may as well get nitrons & some sticky tyres and your car is pretty much the same as an S2 Exige anyway.
