it looks like a bloody good idea, but have you seen the costs?

How much will it cost to use PhoneSafe?

There is no charge for PistonHeads sellers who want to use PhoneSafe. Buyers who contact a seller through PhoneSafe will be charged only a small amount more than direct calls. The charges are listed below:

Day: 37.5p
Evening: 25.0p
Weekend: 12.5p
All prices are pence per minute and calls from a mobile may vary.
PhoneSafe is a completely optional service for sellers.
PH Phonesafe

ing hell, you wouldn't want to be on the phone long!

Ha, 'eliminate' canvassers... yeah, well, we could all do that if we changed our phone numbers to premium rate ones.

And this of course is free to the seller, PH meanwhile will cream a tidy profit from you selling your car.

Only a 'small' amount more than a normal call? boocks!

But at the end of the day, this is a company. You wouldn't provide a service for free, would you?

Be reasonable...

I could understand maybe 15p a minute, but 30+p a minute is a bit steep isn't it?

30p+? Blimey, that's generous, it's 37.5p a minute, that's closer to 40p a minute!

I think I would be put off ringing an advert with one of those numbers - unless it was for something special.

Jesus just come across an ad with 'Phonesafe' in the classifieds what a complete ripoff.

Really surprised this is the only and small thread on it.

5p extra a minute is fair enough but 37p feck off.

Maybe the topic could be edited to

Phonesafe Ripoff In PH Classifieds

So which kind mod would do that ?

37p ... so, how long would you be on the 'phone for when calling about a car? Imagine if you are genuinely interested, it could easily be 10-15 or even 20 minutes.

That's nearly £7.50p! For a telephone call!

It is also cost bourne by the potential buyer, although it is the seller who is pestered by calls from canvassers ... so the seller is having a problem and the cost for solving it is shouldered by the buyer ... no thanks!

Seeing a Phonesafe number on an ad would actively dissuade me from telephoning it, thus making a sale less likely.

I recently sold my car on PH, having had a miserable few months pouring cash into the AutoTrader coffers. The ad cost me nothing. I used my own mobile number in preference to the phonesafe method.
So...
1. How much do think a call from a landline to my mobile costs? Certainly not 5 or 10p per minute.
2. If you don't want to use Phonesafe, how about e-mail?
3. Always something for nothing these days, isn't it? I was bloody pleased to sell my car and with the minimum of cost. What a great service from PH (I only hope it lasts)

Sounds like the same sort of company that operate the phones for patients in hospitals.

best bet is to get a Pay as you go sim card and use that number. When the car is sold, throw the SIM away.

1.) Most people probably use their mobile for the majority of calls these days anyway, and most people will have free inclusive minutes to any network. Therefore free Vs 37p. The only extra costs I incurred on my mobile last month were ones to expensive numbers (my bank's 0845 telephone banking for example).

2.) Don't think anyone argued that wasn't a viable alternative

3.) It's not a case of something for nothing, it's about being reasonable. With 'schemes' like this it's hard not to think that the PH community is suddenly being seen as a cash cow that can be milked dry. Most people would love this service, at a reasonable cost. However, at nearly 40p a minute you may as well be phoning a dirty chat line. It's supposed to deter canvassers but it's more likely to deter genuine buyers. Let's say I was interested in buying an M5 from the classifieds and there were four - five that I liked the look of, if all of the sellers were using Phonesafe and I wanted to discuss each car for 15 minutes that's going to be a very costly exercise.

I will NOT call a phonesafe number. Its taking the piss IMHO.

So word of warning to anybody wanting to sell either a TT coupe or 350Z or 964 in the next few weeks, If you have a phonesafe number, you are OFF my shortlist.

PH/ Haymarket/whatever milking the cashcow.

All people have to do is say "No" to canvassers and put the phone down. No need to inflict 37.5p per minute call charges to prospective customers. End of.

Also, what's the minimum connection charge? If I phone a seller and it goes to voicemail and I hang up, has that just cost 37.5p?
