We are considering a Touareg as the next family barge and am currently wondering which engine to go for.

I guess none of them are particularly good on fuel, but what is achiveable in the real world with the diesel 2.5 and 3l cars and are these much worse in reality than the mighty V10

I am looking at spendig around 20k, but if the later engines are much bettr would perhops up the budget. I know very little about these cars so any advice welcome thanks

The 3 litre diesel is the pick of the range. V10 5-litre diesel must be pretty tasty, but maybe a bit overkill. Also the V10 lump weighs 200kg more than the petrol V8! That's quite a bit of extra weight over the front axle!

I haven't driven one but the 2.5 diesel is said to be a bit slow and agricultural. That might be a bit harsh, though.

I have the 4.2 petrol V8. Quite rare but a bargain second hand since no one can afford to run them (avg 18mpg on a run). The V8 suits the car very well, coupled with the six-speed autobox. Loads of grunt, really effortless.

The V6 petrol isn't actually much more efficient since it has to be worked hard to drag the 2.4 tonnes around.

Just make sure it's got xenons for an easier re-sale.

My 2.5d averaged 25mpg, the loan v10 I had for a while on one of the many occasions it broke averaged 22mpg!

Get a late one, my '04 was one of the most unreliable cars I've ever had, it was off the road for a month in 12 months.....

Thanks chaps.

Not brillant MPG for oil burners are they. We might wait for a later car, but with only 3mpg different the V10 could make sense

or go with the new Freelander, but its just nothing like as good an environment to sit in

They're so strong & heavy that MPG is never going to be decent. On the plus side if you're going to have a crash it's a good place to be. The cabin ambience is excellent and it's all well put together.

Mine eats brakes and there are a few well-reported electrical glitches.

I get up to 30mpg from my V10,and NEVER below 20,even giving it some pain.In my opinion the V10 is the best model, its not that quick from a standstill but once it gets rolling then it just piles the speed on constantly and quickly to some quite scary speeds.I think its performance figures are very similar to the latest Golf 2.0T GTI
