Anyone advise me on how long to wait between coats of POR 15?

The tin just says "Apply in thin coats, Topcoat (POR chassis paint)between 3-5 hours" but that doesn't really tell me how long between the POR 15 coats. I was going to put two coats on but maybe one is enough?? confused

I reckon less than 24 hours (when it hardens) and after it goes tacky so you can overcoat. The times vary a lot with temperature.

It might be a bit late now, but I did some outrigger painting last week and did the first coat at about 1.00pm and my kind nephew, whose garage I was using, put the second coat on at about 6.00pm.

The trouble I have had is getting the Dinitrol wax to dry as I have put it on a bit thick.

I put two coats on but only left it for an hour or so between coats. Don't think it really matters in the grand scheme of things. I left it for 24 hours before topcoating with Hammerite however.

Yes, done now, did two coats, dried quite quckly (2/3 hours)waited until "touch dry but with finger drag" as mentioned on tin for topcoat. Have used POR "Chassis coat" on top.

P.S. Got to all sorts of places (sides above triangular plates etc) by using Sticky velcro loop pads (by Sellotape I think)wrapped round coat hanger wire.

P.S. I now know POR14 doesn't come off skin! got it all over my wrists!

That is a bit of a myth! Thinners gets it off before it hardens - stings a tad on the face tho. Std Celly thinners is just a good as the POR thinners for cleaning up IME.

Why would he say it if it were a myth? Clearly he let it harden without realising. I've done it myself and no it doesn't come off unless you remove it quite quickly.

..and did you try thinners, its not the same as turps...

Hardening takes @24 hours.... maybe 12 in summer... People keep saying it doesn't come off, I am just pointing out it can be removed with thinners, just as 2k paints will until they harden. Once the hardening has taken place then thinners will not affect the paints - but it takes quite a long time before this state.

It certainly does come off, and is broken down by solvent otherwise my spray guns would still be full of the stuff wink

I read your first reply spend, yes I tried thinners! People aren't all lying when they say it happens, not many people are pleased about holding a meeting the following day with dark Grey hands biggrin

After approx 1hr it doesn't come off my hands, face, arms etc. Anyway, why am I arguing about this, it's bloody irrelevant in the grand scheme of anything!

Maybe you have funny skin, sort of leathery and ape like wink

Yeh,but Spend your spray guns dont have finger prints and under finger nails for that stuff to sticktongue outi have used it twice and would not recommend getting it on your skin, cell thinners just spreads that stuff around and really drives it into your skin.

FFS, the paint delivery 'orifices' in a spray gun are hell of a lot harder to clean than people! (and before you start you can only thin it a tad to spray!) Try wearing gloves when you use the stuff, I generally end up only having to resort to solvents on face & arms, which in my case are a lot more sensitive than my hands... bl00dy southern wimps!

If you agree POR dissolves with thinners, how can you then say it just spreads it? The solvent is working - you just aren't using enough..

The answer is read the tin.

I used POR 15 on my outriggers and it was a bitch to work with, you need to sand and clean the surface really well first which is 80% of the time taken, and POR is very runny and hard to work with, but the result is good, it's hard as nails when done.
