Guys - you know I'm doing research into possibly getting my 2nd bike late this year/early next due to my back. Mow many of you will find these questions stupid, so stop reading now, please don't say what a silly thing to ask. Quick bit of background..as a kid I was drawn to bikes b looks and sound and the thought of what it would be like to ride one, bot the engines or the names, mainly just looks and sound. Years later after a divorce I managed to get one, still not interested in the engine etc, but now that I'm thinking a lot about stuff I'm wondering things that you might find daft (rememeber the pills I'm on..it could be them talking). The new issue of Bike dropped through my letter box yesterday...big advert for Yamaha, quote ..from the king of supersport the YZF-R1 to the versitile FZ6. Now looking down the side of this ad. I looked at these 2 bikes and thought what makes one sporty and one versitile ? They both kinda looked the same to me..very nice..but the same.

So that made me ask this qestion what is in a bikes name..now this is for my research..what to make sure I get the right bike.

Yamaha - YZF - mean anything? I think R1 just means engine size.
Honda have the CBR again mean anything ?
The new Kawasaki ZZR - same question.
GSXR - very popular..but the name means nothing.

I presume it's a bit like cars...Honda Accord - Ford Foucs etc.
You have Honda Fireblade etc etc.

Now how do I know ny name the type of bike I'll be looking at, example to you experienced guys..if I said ZZR 1400 - you would know if it was a sportsbike or a tourer.

Do the names of bikes mean anything ?

Looking at the ad in Bike - I would buy a Yamaha (since I've previously had 1) since I like them..but the name doesn't mean much to me I would know if you said to me YZF that it was Yamaha..but couldnt tell you anything else about it. I looked at the bikes in the ad and liked most, would take them on a test run and then decide which to buy. But i guess the whole thing I'm wondering is do these names mean much ? I just look at the bike at know that the bit at end is the size of engine e.g ZZR 1400.

Sorry if this is a stupid question..but I'm bored..and I really am looking into my next bike..just don't know much bout names...can a name tell you if it's faired/naked??...I'm a dumbass..i know..it's the pills.

I am bored...just the names, I'm kinda thinkin feck theirs a guy in the mag asking if hemet a guy wore in a pic in the previous article was an X-11 eek I think to myself..feck..i don't even know what FZF means...just wondering if I know enough to own something that looks grest..but I know feck all about, I love riding them and passed with 0 minors..so i can ride them, but the test only tells you how to get them going..learning to ride is another matter..guess im feeling sorry for myself..don't think i know enough. Just want to be the best I can when i get my next machine.
Ohhh..don't worry mate..it will be in black.
About those pills...if we did meet for a jar and i happened to leave a strip of them on the table when i left (cos i need to take them everywhere) then thats my fault and IF someone picked them up..well i guess they'd hand them in at the nearest police station and not do anything silly..like take them winkbiglaughbiglaugh

I know the VFR and VTR are V-Four/Twin Racerep. Not sure about the CBR.

and it all falls into place! rolleyes
Why GS as 4x4T?
th x i can get (4 valves in an x formation per cylinder)

Found out on the interweb thingybob that CB stands for City Bike, the R for racerep, hence CBR.

'YZ' were chosen as the last 2 letters of the alphabet - literally the 'last word'
Clever. the F means its a straight Four. The R is self-explainatory by now.

ZX and ZZ have developed from the Z1 - which was allegedly named like that with an 'alpha and omega' twist. the last letter of the alphabet, the first number. Made to be the ultimate in biking.
