I was told at last year's service that I need a new cam. Am going to get a second opinion but am wondering whether to go for standard or stealth. From what I've read on here the stealth should give a worthwhile improvement over the standard with little or no low end compromise.

Have had a quick chat to Rob a V8D and he advised that I should be able to put the steath kit in with no other mods (maybe get a re-map at a later date for more benefit) & no need for new springs or pocketed pistons.

The car's going in for a service soon, probably Furnhursts, so was thinking of asking them to change the cam if required.

The car is a standard (as far as I know) '98 450, 44k miles. Any views as to Std vs stealth appreciated...

I'm getting my 500 rebuilt at the moment and Dom at TVR Power recommended going with the standard cam to maintain drivability. I live in London though, so this is important to me. Incidentally, my car was in at Fernhurst for the work to be done and they sent it straight to Power - seems they send all their engine work there. I'd phone Bryan to see whether they'll do your cam or send it to Power.

are you getting the rebuild done at Power? Roughly what is this costing?

I am a big fan of the V8 developments Stealth cam. It is not great at producing peak bhp so if this is your aim i would go another route. BUT the mid range punch is fantastic. This is where the car is driven most of the time IMO. Jon

Sure am. I had a cylinder liner go and I've been told that all of the rotational gear will be replaced as well as the work on the cylinder in question. This means new cam, rocker gear, clutch, etc. Dom estimated around £3K inc. VAT for the entire fix. That includes a 2 year warranty on the work.

Does anyone know how many hours to replace a camshaft and can this be done in situ or engine out job. This is assuming that rockers, followers etc..do not need to be replaced.
Thanks

I'd go for the stealth cam,as you wont really lose driveability, but will gain power-win/winsmile.In answer to the last posters question, you can change the cam in situ, you do not need new rockers as long as yours are in good order, but new followers are a must imho.Other things like valve springs and timing chain and sprockets are also worth consideration when doing a cam change.
