Hello peeps.

OK - so at 62k I need a cam change. I'm not looking for a wild cam - just a replacement. Problem is that most garages and engine people I spoke to say they won't replace the cam without doing an engine rebuild (of some description). So I am trying to decide whether to take the risk of just replacing my cam.

So some questions -

How many people have replaced cam without doing additional engine work?
Any problems later on? Would you consider this reckless?
Who did this for you (I live in the south east - any recommendations)
What did you pay roughly?

Cheers

The cam followers also need to be replaced at the same time as the cam and I believe the cam and followers come as a kit for about 200 quid.

Call these guys for advice.

If you change the cam you need to replace the cam and followers as a set. If the cam has worn out the drive gear will be worn out too. Cam, followers, duplex timing chain and vernier gears will set you back about £500. I'd budget about the same again for labour. This is just to replace the cam. You might decide that it's sensible to service the heads while they're off. That could easily add another few hundred quid to the bill. If you have substantially changed the spec of the cam you would be advised to get the fuel map adjusted to match.

thanks

i spoke to the guys at v8. yes i had planned to upgrade the whole kit. TBH was considering an MC1.

I've just heard a few scare stories of people replacing cams and then ending up with serious damage. Was trying to get a feel for the risk I am taking just replacing the cam (and associated parts) without rebuilding the bottom end.

Got mine done for the Griff last year at Castle Race Engines + the additional bits, timing gear etc. I had a piper cam put in, I imagine I now have the original power back to what it should have been when I bought it, makes a world of difference IMHO and worth the expense. wink
