I know that this subject has been covered to death but any advice on track day for a (miserly) first-timer none too keen on over-priced, poor value 'track day' packages would be great.

Actual driving time is what we all crave so are there any hidden gems which give you real value for money (I do not mind paying a three-figure sum providing you get a few hours).

I know BAT are running a novice only day In April. I use BAT a fair bit for regular track days and always find them excellent and never over crowded.

Have a look at the calender here http://bookatrack.com/-pE

I know a lot of experienced track dayers don't like the place, but Bedford is a great place for novices. I've recently completed two days there (one of which was very wet) and have booked a third.
Lots of room to make errors and you would really have to be unlucky to hit anything.
They are very strict on noise though.

Are the prices on bookatrack about the industry standard (£375 for the day) if I wish to hire a car? What costs are on top of this?

Unfortunately, I dont have one I can use on the track at the moment.

I was going to go to that as well, but I can't get that particular day off work. Probably going to the one the Saturday before. I did however want to go on the novice day.

As it is my first track day am I likely to get murdered at Anglesey in an 1800 MX5 on a normal track day and will I just be in everyones way?

CrackOneOut - don't worry about being murdered on a BookATrack day - it's very nicely policed and they'll look after you. (and I'm not just saying that - I've been on their days)

Tizer - to do a trackday where someone is providing the car for you and saying "you don't mind paying into the 3 figures" suggests you might be just slightly underestimating the price of it all. Expect to pay 3 figures just for track time. The Bookatrack price you quoted is an exceptional deal.

Jonny - where are you? I've turned into an advertorial for you!

I will be there instructing on the day, and if you've never been on a trackday before, make sure you book at least one session of instruction, as early in the day as possible. I'm not trying to sell myself, because I am paid the same whether I instruct one person or twelve! In a twenty minute session you will learn more about lines, technique & etiquette, than you will just driving aimlessly around all day, and I can guarantee that you will save more than the cost of instruction in tyre and brake wear alone, let alone damage if you end up in the wall!!

When I lead the sighting laps around first thing in the morning, you are welcome to sit in with me, and I would explain various points as we went round!

Look forward to seeing you at Anglesey, Howard
