I have just bought an oil filter for my Chimaera from the local dealer - paid £13.21 for a standard Unipart filter (GFE 487).

Out of interest I got a price direct from Unipart - £5.97. Trade price will be even lower (the cost from the manufacturer is around £1.50). However Landrover do charge £9.90 for their equivalent.

I can understand a hefty mark-up on unpopular stocked parts, but each dealer must get through tens of these per month. The same applies to Mobil 1.

So are the service parts subsidising other bespoke bits? I thought £90 for a suspension wishbone was good value (with £10 of bushes pre-fitted).

Maybe the extra just covers all those fiddly jobs that cannot be charged per hour, like leak detection and intermittent electrical faults.

that oil filter sounds about right (!), but you've been stung on that suspension ... - no really you have ..

Thanks, I didn't realise there was an alternative! Peninsular do tubular upper ones but I wanted lower.

Too late now though - I have bought them, repainted and waxoyled already.

Prices often rise to whatever people are prepared to pay. Then when they stop selling, the prices come down again.

The only exception is taxes, where if you think they're too high they put you in prison.
