Hello all, not posted in the bike section before. I'm thinking of selling my car, doing my cbt/test etc and getting a bike over the next few months.

As a bike novice i'd like to get as much info under my belt as possible before doing this; are there any particularly good websites or forums worth looking into? (I've read the sticky) Also, any hints/tips or other information would be great.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cheers,Ben

Don't sell the car just yet - you may not like winter riding - esparcially if you have mote than a 20min commute.

Don't stick to newbie threads here - read EVERYTHING. I am constantly amazed at the amount of info on here, and even when some idiot posts nonsense it's good stuff: you get all the rebuttals.

Keep reading , get out, get riding.

I'd hold off on selling the car, do your CBT/Test around or just after Easter to see how you find it. Then sell the car and buy a bike.

Riding in the colder months is certainly not for everyone - as much fun as it is. I love riding on a cold sunny morning, but even the toughest die-hard bikers probably don't enjoy the worst weather of all - grey skies, heavy rain and freezing temperatures! (Although still more 'fun' than a car!)

Best to get 'into' bikes over the summer months! That way by the time the cold miserable weather comes, you'll have experienced great weather riding and won't mind so much! The number of bikers I know who started in the middle of winter and gave up a few months later is incredible. Their 'view' of biking is somewhat tainted by bad-weather riding with little or no great-weather riding.

I used to ride daily between 2000 and 2005. I then moved into cars and haven't done a huge amount of riding since. That said, I'm getting back onto two wheels this year and selling the car simply due to the fun element compared with the cost. A decent, modern performance car will cost a huge amount to buy, fuel, tax and service compared to a bike and the bike will depreciate a lot less too.

You'll love it!

Thanks for the replies gents.

The car that'll be going is a second car as i've got a company one. The bike will not be for the commute, just weekend/evening/early morning stuff.

ahh as long as you have access to a car. as others have said it takes a certain type of nutcase to ride all year.

I am that nutcase. Car's up for sale, too.

Can do everything except high winds: inadvertent lane changes on the M3 at 85mph can be...err...exciting...

One of the better motorcycling forums is http://themotorbikeforum.co.uk/index.php . Unlike many of the others, it is not specific to any particular make or model of bike and has a wide (UK) geographical spread of members.

unfortunatly the woman who runs it prides herself on the sense of humour she hasnt got. but that could just be my opinion.
