I'm looking for some really good walnut or cherry worktops for a new kitchen. Not the stripy block stuff you get in B&Q, but something with a bit more character, nice grain etc.

I have a quote from Thorogoods in Ardleigh (£££!) so need to cast the net a bit wider before deciding. They are good, and will use planks 4-6" wide, but will cost a third of my whole budget!

Anywhere else in Essex or Suffolk?

John, What thickness of wood you looking for! I have a quantity of Yew, Elm. & Walnut. Small quantity of reclaimed Oak from a local Hall.

Interesting! 40mm would be nice. Do you feel elm and yew are stable enough for worktops?

I always thought wide planks of any type of wood are liable to warping?

The "stripy block stuff" as you call it, is made that way because it's more stable.

I'm sure Norm Abram would tell you smile

You're right Gary, and I wouldn't expect to get planks 600mm wide anyway. The narrower each plank, the more stable, and also the cheaper as there's less wastage - that's why the likes of B&Q sell them in 'block' style. However 4-6" seemed like a fair compromise and would give the room something a bit more special. I've seen it done and it's very nice, I just need to shop round.

Most types of wood are ok! as long the grain & width of the wood is not too wide. The wood I have is only approx. 25-30mm thick.

That's a pity; I wanted the chunkier look. Sounds nice though. If you have 20mm planks how about laminating them together (or onto MDF for better stability and lower cost) with an edging?

Thanks for the other links folks, I'll have a browse.
