I believe it was as a remap is supposed to deliver a lot more power.

Witness some guy getting his car lpg'd and it actually produced more power after!

No power change from 4.0L to 4.4L but a torque change.

286...seem like an odd and recurring power output with BMWs doesn't it?...Until one translates it to 210 KW and that there may be certain tax etc implications in Germany related to power outputs.

4.0 to 4.4 is obviously a 'hardware' change...but on my 4.4L I've also had a 'software' change (by Simon of E-Maps). Thus the pegged 286PS/210KW output has been shed in favour of a putative 309 PS!

Is this just from E-Maps claims, or did you do a full before and after on the same rolling road or VBOX ? I know that KW outputs are held within tax bands, but Phil Crouch didn't think there was much mileage in mapping my E39 540i

No, you're right it's just from "claims".

To be honest I wasn't really that bothered about ultimate power increases etc on the car as I drive it so rarely and percentage-wise even the claimed increases aren't exactly huge. I mean, 286 up to 309 actually isn't that much...

Certainly, it feels a 'bit quicker'...or rather more 'urgent' and aggressive in the higher rev range. which I think is nice on a Coupe?

The most immediate thing I noted, indicating an alteration, was a change for the better in mpg...Again, not that that particularly bothers me given the miles that I do in this car (i.e only circa 400 miles between the last two MOT's....and it's not far off 100 miles accounted for to get the two MOT's!).But I use that rightly or wrongly that the engine is now delivery in a more efficient manner.

The Coupe is lovely, you keep all your cars in wonderful condition

Interesting, >20bhp increase from a map on a n/a engine is quite impressive.

How much do emaps charge for a 540 remap?

Has anyone had the car dyno'd before and after?

Thanks Madou

I think the cost would depend on how far Simon would have to travel to get to you. For me he didn't have to come too far. Probably best to contact him direct to get a quote.

I don't know if anyone has done back to back before and after dyno tests but I'd be interested to see the results/evidence too.

I don't know too much about this sort of thing but maybe the condition of the engine itself has a bearing? Mine has only 25K miles on the clock, runs superbly and showed no fault codes at all when Simon ran a diagnostic on it before he started.

I don't think it's that impressive when you put it in the context of a V8 with 4 valves per cyl and 4,400 cc giving a bhp of just 65 bhp per litre

I'm looking at a re-map for my 740 (M62) bhp claims don't really mean much - but all previous cars I have had re-mapped have had huge benefits in terms of drivabilty in mid range

An increase to 70 bhp per litre should not be a big ask, consider the Alpina B10 E39 engine, 4.6l rated 225kw ( 347bhp ) at 75 bhp per litre, and the BMW factory 4.6l engine with the same rated output

Is there anything mechanical holding back bhp per litre on the 4.4l engine, or is it just engine mapping ?

Fully agree that 65 bhp per litre isn't a lot. But I had thought that it would take a combination of map and mechanical mods to get more than 20bhp more?

Yes, a very badly designed exhaust manifold... The 4.4 with a set of equal length headers, 100 cell cats and a re-map is good for around 330Bhp. There is a E30 M3 with one of these running around the Ring and I dare say it is rather rapid...

I remapped my girlfriends 2003 E39 540 from 286 to 303 bhp but I have not tried chipping my own 1994 E34 540 to see what difference it would make.

Maybe it would improve the same amount? That would then rule out the software restriction.
