New rear window

Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to replace the rear window on an S-Series hood? Any suggestions for upholsterers in the Herts/Essex/Middx area?

Not yet, but I've found one that looks very promising.

Despite owning several cars with hoods I've never replaced a window yet, so I have no idea how much we're looking at. I presume any upholsterer can replace one given a few minutes on a sewing machine - not a long job? (Not going to get stung for a new hood or anything silly)

Had mine replaced for 60 quid, but I had to take the rear roof section completely apart. It can be pretty tricky getting the roof securing bolts out.

A machinist in Barry Docks, they primarily make bouncy castles and it`s a very small buisness. I can get you an address later as I`ve forgotten the company name

Is the hood cracked / split or just scratched?
Renovo do polish to get scratches out.

My V8S was £200, but the material is far better than the originals was and it was all hand stiched etc. I knew it would not be cheap, but I also knew it would be good, which it is.

It was Thursmaton, Leicester.

I've not used them myself, but AR Pound in Baldock often get recommended and they're only slightly north of you area. May be worth a call to them?

I have another contact but he is semi retired. Finally I believe there's an Eastern European chap around my area who is good value in terms or £/quality!

Might seem like an odd question, but has anyone tried putting a heavy weight zip between plastic and surround, like on the early MX5s? My screen needs replacing ideally as its got a few cracks in it from being folded down. The mk1 MX5 got around this by having a zip along the sides and top which enabled you to flatten the panel. It would need to take the roof stays into account, but I reckon it could be done. The usual trick of having a towel in the car is ok, but if you've got even the slightest leak, you tend to end up with a mouldy mess..

That would be a good idea Simon. The place where I went to could certainly do that as they are car restorers and seem to be able to do almost anything.

I didn't think you tended to look out of the rear window much

Try to avoid looking out of the back window, but its nice to not have a leak back there..

Could do with knowing where you got yours done, mine will need attention soon.

Oh, and we're +1 for the S club do..

Jim King of Thurmaston, sometimes known as Jim the trim. Has done some fantastic restoration jobs, old fashioned in terms of pride of work and quality. Not cheap, but good. Has classic cars himself (e.g. Stag) and so has a passion for it.

Often goes to AF too. He's about 3 miles from where I live.

Plus one for S club eh???
