LSD not working?

Tried to move my 2004 cv8 up a very slight slope in the snow today,no chance what so ever! My neighbour said that only one wheel was spinning (traction control off) I wonder if the LSD is worn out or broken.The car is also pretty difficult to pull away smoothly in wet or damp conditions.Does anyone have experience of this? I suspect although it has low mileage that it has had some hard track miles,the discs for example show significant grooving.Also the diff whines at 50to 55mph its quiet above or below this speed.

Pretty normal situation. Seems stock the diff isnt set up right. It needs just the right amount of friction modifier. Talk to a sponsor, they will know how to sort it out properly.

Yes, sometimes the diff setup from the factory it not so good. Fix for me was a visit to Monkfish permformance and to see Roger (oil and modifier change).

I had a problem this morning about 1am after dropping someone off - slight incline and had problems in the snow. Thankfully, 2nd gear and let diff lock about 20 degree angle and was fine with zero right pedel. Pull nice and straight up the hill - although not a good feeling going past parked cars at a weird angle.

The diff whine is not totally uncommon on these cars at 50mph. Mine has it and loads of posting on the LS1GTO forum. Have to live with it really or change for a 3.91 or similar. I am told it is a clearance issue within the diff and does not affect wear etc (that is not from a dealer BTW).

did the same thing. You need to calibrate your LSD with new oil and the right amount of friction modifier.
Too little modifier and the LSD is clunky as it locks too easily. Over a few days keep adding modifier a few squirts (or a glug) at a time until the clunking stops. You will then have a calibrated LSD and you will notice a significant difference in your ability to become sideways from a standing start.

I know it's not easy, but could you possibly describe that sound a little further? I have a very annoying low pitch whining that occurs randomly, but is only really audible at lower speeds. Sounds like it comes from the rear, but these things are so hard to pin point from the drivers seat, and it's often mis-leading. The sound can be stopped instantly with the slightest application of brakes.

Your right, it is very difficult to describe. Basically, mine is a fairly mdeium/high pitched whine which only kicks in at approx 48-53 MPH and mainly 5th gear, it does do it in 4th boot exhaust noise helps hide it a little more. Under power etc it is not noticable but sat in slow moving motorway traffic it is annoying. Soundproofing did help quite a lot but still there (can always just use the stereo volume control).

It is all about the speed and not about braking etc in my case, as if you speed up a little it goes or slow down a little more it also goes.

I have not spoken to the dealer about it as pretty much already know the answer - live with it. Other option is replace the diff for a 3.91 or similar. I had hoped that the Harrop Diff cover would help but am told it will not - so thats another future mod anyway for me.

It makes me think your noise may not be the diff.

Thankyou! From what you say then, it definately sounds like it's not the same problem. On the way home just now, it's as bad as it's ever been... from 30 or 40, right down to a walking pace, this groaning/medium pitched whine is really quite loud. Seems to make a difference if the camber of the road changes, or I turn slightly left or right. I was playing with the brakes just now as well, and it seems, if I slightly depress the pedal, so that you can barely feel that the car is slowing, the noise increases in pitch slightly, until with a little more braking, it stops completely. Very odd.

I've been thinking about a diff cover as well, but that's to stop the axle tramp that is rife in my car it seems.

Once I get those to problems sorted, and the knocking noise from the engine when cold, I'll be happy with this car again lol. Starting to wonder what the first owner did in the 1000 miles he had it from new!!

Hi there, I had this noise problem with a 2006 R8 Clubby I had in NZ. Turns out it is a brake pad/caliper problem causing the groaning and was fixed under warranty by the local agent. Had the same problem but to a very much lesser extent with my 2005 Maloo ute although its done 24 ks now and I don't have the problem any more. Try checking that out.

Hey, thank you for that. It sounds more and more like it could be brake related. Last time it was at a dealer to investigate these noises however, I was assured the brakes were inspected and ruled out as a possible cause. Do you have any idea exactly what the nature of the fault was?
