Hi all

Still under the Chim. Found nearside front corner of the outrigger was just compacted rust, so that'll need replacing frown - offside one OK though. smile

Moving to the rear, the wishbones all need cleaning up as does the chassis around them (outriggers OK). How do you remove the upright to get access to the back of it for cleaning and to remove the wishbones? I see there are large hub nuts, but I've heard horror stories about these in terms of how tight they are and would prefer not to go there if possible.

All help gratefully received

Undo the drive shaft from the back, brakes off, there are 2 bolts at the bottom wishbone - the nuts are inside, then just the top wishbone connection IIRC. Be warned they are VERY HEAVY...

8 cap bolts, cant remember the size, don't round them though. Access is OK if you keep turning the shaft round, its just as easy to remove the driveshaft (same connection at Diff) if you are wanting to do a clean up, I reckon.

And clean out the cap headed bolts with a sharp instrument(road crap & grime) to allow the tool to go all the way in(slight tap on tool assists this)otherwise you can expect rounded fastnerseekjust as Spend says.

For the capscrews in the CV joints.

8mm allen key or even I use an 8mm allen key cut so you have just the long piece left, this then inserts into an 8mm 1/2" socket.

Are you sure they aren't 7/16" imperial, I'm fairly sure thats what I use when torqueing/loosening and only use an 8mm ball-end to spin off/on?

I have a feeling that may be why quite a few get rounded wink

You're getting mixed up. The bolts may well be 7/16"UNF but the allen key would be 5/16" or a kick in the ring piece off 8mm
7/16 is 11mm ish

Probably right about that Dave, but I have used an 8mm key to take all mine of and it was fine.

OOPS Dave, bit of a fuzzy head myself. If the bolts were 7/16 UNF, like I said, that would be some mighty joint. I'm certain they are 3/8 UNF( still 5/16 allen key)

Andy I was going to say I'll mount you in a minute, but that wouldn't have sounded right would it hehe

You can do everything without removing the hubs or brakes/calipers. Unbolt the wishbones and remove them leaving the disc and caliper propped on blocks of wood. Whether the hub carrier is on the car or not you won't gain any additional access.
