For all those with Rattly S2 Elise's without Touring packs there is help at hand!

This weekend I've been retrofitting the touring pack to my 03 111s. Despite the brochures saying the 02 model 111s onwards had sound insulation, this was actually just a couple of bits of foam behind the rear speakers & the carpet.

After a few cut fingers & lots of swearing I managed to fit the Lotus large moulded peice of rubberised foam in the rear bulkhead which improves road noise considerably & fit the damping mats under the seats, foot wells & bulkheads. To further reduce wind noise I also lined the softop with some carpet insulation that cost me £10 off Ebay. You just cut it to the size of the softop & use some spray adhesive & velcro tape on both sides.

All in this cost me around 150 quid & an afternoons work. The car feels much more solid now, hardly rattles & on the motorway I can now have a conversation & use the hands free.

If anyone else is getting a bit fed up with their noisy elise, these are the parts you need to order..

1 * foam bulkhead touring pack insulation - part no: A120V0003K
2 * Bulkhead damping sheets - part no: A117V0511F
2 * Seat damping sheets - part no: A116V0309F
2 * Footwell damping sheets - part no: A117B0558F

All of the above Lotus parts came to 115 quid inc vat from B&C.

Even managed to retrim both of the side sills whilst I was at it with £10 worth of faux leather off ebay so no more unslightly scuffs.

If anyone wants pics, say & I will upload (once I work out how to).

I thought it was the MY04 cars that had the extra sound insulation? Have to have a poke around and see what mine has in there smile

Yep, the 04 one's did, you should have all of the above. but the original S2 111s (02-03) was also said to have sound insulation in the brochure. The only additional stuff it had was carpet! If you look under your floor mats there should be a dynamat type panel stuck to the floor if you've got the touring pack.

The kit should fit all other standard S2 Elise's as well btw.

I'm going to be doing mine soon. Going to take off that bloody cheapo piece of plastic behind the seats and coat it in some foam and some rubber edging to remove all the reverberance and squeeks it creates.

May also put a bit of black carpet under the seats to prevent any loose coins creating a racket!

£110 seems expensive for what can be done much cheaper using parts from B&Q and the like. Although i suppose it is just convenient to know that it is all going to fit without any hassle...

BTW mine is a 2004MY 111R without touring pack. It has wind up windows, no front driving lights and no sound deadening smile

I'd usually agree with you, was originaly going to use loft insulation I had left over, but the bespoke panel fits every nook & cranny in the bulkhead perfectly including the parts behind the seat belt winders (this part cost 70 quid). For the flooring you could just use dynamat if you can get it cheaply. The actual offical lotus mats worked out cheaper than dynamat though (only about 3-7 quid each). The capets under the seat could be easily done by buying some of ebay & cutting to size.

I definitely recommend you do it though. The car feels so much more solid now.

Did you have to take both seats out? Or did you manage to do it by just taking the passenger seat out and moving the driver seat all the way forward?

Yep, got away with just taking the passenger one out & moving the drivers all the way forward. Bit of a squeeze but very straightforward, just fit into the passenger side first & then push into the drivers side. You don't have to remove the speakers either just take out the 4 plastic screws at the top of the plastic & give it a tug.

Also bear in mind the alarm sensor is kept against the firewall. The custom foam peice has the holes to let this poke through. Fitting your own insulation might cover this up & prevent you from getting in.

How heavy is the large piece of foam that goes behind the bulk head plastic?

Not very, no more than 5kg I'd say. It's basically just a big bit of foam covered in rubber, bends all over the place but is quite thick.

It also improves the bass response in the speakers btw.

Tell a lie, actually its around 5-10kg I'd say (just picked up a weight).
