I like the silver, but of course I would prefer black. Any thoughts on quality of the gelcoat? Would I have to kill myself to get the black to look amazing or should I save myself the hassle and stick with silver?

Any thoughts/input?

Go with orange, seems like everyone has black. Orange is very unique, with some indiglo blue Dymag carbon/magnesium wheels, 650hp LS7, with a tricked out gearbox for 231mph, and a triple plate clutch. That sounds nice.

I prefer the word 'reliable', when you say predictable, it makes you sound bored.

What's the finish like up close? I'm a paint and body guy - and a total nit pick. Will I be happy out of the box or will there be a week of sanding and rubbing required?

To most owners the gel coat finish is fine but it would not stand up in the world of detailing.
I can't say if you 'will be happy out of the box' as that is purely down to you.
If you do decide to paint then I would suggest you wait a year or more as GF continues to shrink after curing and may develop an orange peel or slightly undulating surface. If you don't wait you will have to work on the paint again when that surface begins to show through the paint.

The finish is pretty good though, and improved with some wetsanding and buffing. There's a few fit issues, which are to be expected from a glass racing car body... have at the link and see what Brad did. I emailed him some time ago about the bodywork tidying up, he said the guy that did it put gelcoat over the modifications and blended it back into the original.

Ive never seen this car in person but those that have said that it is very very tidy.

Believe it or not I considered having a chrome finish on the GTR - not only was it expensive, good results were hard to achieve.

However, ultimately I decided it was 'too' much for the car. Same goes for flip paint etc. Somehow, it just cheapens the look and adds to the 'kit car' reputation.

But in answer to your question, my favourite is still the factory gelcoat blue.

I still think black gelcoat looks good but it is an absolute killer to keep clean. Mine is now 6 years old and still looks but will at some stage nned to be painted as have accumulated several cracks and loads of stone ships in front of rear wheels. I tip to any new owner is to get the area in cront of the rear wheels covered in 3m stuff!

The other option is to have the car, or part of the car 'vinyl wrapped'. The company claims that it gives excellent protection against chipped gel coat and it can easily be removed if you want to revert back to the original. I enquired and was told it would be about 1500 quid.

Saw a great WHITE Gallardo yesterday on the M3.... looked very nice. I hear white is the new silver. Any white ultimas?? would be rare at least...

(PS Wayne - Red is the only real colour for a sports car or course you know that deep down!)

If you do go with Silver I would suggest a grey gel coat body. I have a Red gel coat and I'm very tempted with Silver myself. My only concern would be the glaring red bits showing through with every little stone chip. Wouldn't be such a problem with grey.

Good luck

smile Yup - seen that, and 50 Cent's chrome Murcielago!

Just goes to show, money doesn't by taste! yes

Edited to say - I didn't realise you could get it done in film?! Much more even finish than the paint versions I've seen.

I too am a fan of the orange. My car will be orange when I order it. That sounds like a nice set-up there! But my wheels will probably be black.

Anybody have a car with the original gel coat in the Los Angeles area I could take a look at?

Doesn't have to be a special meeting or anything, just let me know the next time you're going to supercar Sunday - I'll probably be there anyway biggrin.
