996 C4 or Masa 4200
Discussion
Depends how often you plan to drive it? Maser has better sense of occasion, style, rear seatspace i think?? and i guess the badge but it cannott match a 911 in any other department from speed, everyday all weather useability, reliabilty and relatively low running and servicing costs.
I also have the same dillema of buying a newer 2005 Porsche 997S or a 2002 Ferrari 360 - both roughly at the same price currently but i just know the Ferrari is not a good idea as i do at least 10k miles a year and cannot afford/justify £3-4k servicing bills.

Take a look at this previous thread for my response to a similar question last October.
Four months on I have used the 4200 regularly over the winter and, come rain, sleet or sunshine it has been faultless. Not to mention fun! It's just had its 31k full service (not too bad at £900), and whilst I don't mind the 100+ litres of V Power every week helping Shell's profits, it hurts to know those muppets in No.11 are getting most of it.
Try one. It's a very civilised way of being a hooligan!

Back in 2005 I took the 4200 and the 996 C4S for a week back to back driving around devon.
The maserati got all the attention, sounded the best and in the dry felt the quickest. The interior was nice if a bit cr*p put together and the satnav was useless. Both myself and my wife loved this car, however the parents thought the ride in the back was a bit harsh.
The porsche got no attention except for a few w*nker signs and the interior was dull, dull. However, once it was wet the maserati wouldn't see which way it went, it had an awesome ability to cover ground in typical british weather i.e when raining. I didn't have the heart to put the parents in the back of the porsche.
Our view was definately the Maserati was the better car overall even though it easily comes second to the porsche for handling, running costs etc. It had a better sense of ownership.

Appreciate any owner views on the Masa..... I am considering buying a used example. My head says German and heart says Italian
Excellent, saved me the trouble of posting same question.I always seem to need just a little bit more passenger/luggage space than Porsches have so I think its time for a 4200.

I've had a 996C2 and a 3200 so not quite the ones in your post. However, the Porsche is considerably better engineered than the maserati. It handles better and is ideal as a day to day car.
If it's a 2nd car for weekends and pleasure then the Maser will be the one for you I think. Great sense of occasion etc.

Congratulations!
What colour/spec did you get? Did you get one of the MC Victory's? Its worth bobbing over to www.maseratiforum.co.uk when you get a chance.

UPDATEDeal on hold at present pending confirmation of where oil leak coming from on my part ex. Gutted!
Have owned a 4200 for nearly 2 years and it is my daily driver and frankly I have been astonished at just how usable it is. Very practical (room in the back for the kids on the school run) and no more issues than my last couple of M series Bimmers, probably less infact. It is always a sense of occasion to get in and frankly the interior is one of the best this side of a Bentley. Some of the colour combimations are not always what you might call traditional, but they are reasonably well screwed together these days. Mine is black with ivory, classic but very classy. Running costs are not even that outrageous, just make sure you get a warranty if it is out of manufacturer warranty. Otherwise they are not that scary to purchase if you get a good one. If you get a bad one then things will be different but the same is true of a bad 911, many a horror story to tell about them! Do not be afraid, do it!
