Ferrari 355 Spyder
Discussion
Having sold my Ultima and "seen the light" I will be after a 355 Spyder in March. Having read a number of threads on this particular model I was looking for some advice on used prices and whether or not its worth considering buying privately over trade? As an example theres one for sale at marlow cars for £37k yet similar models can be upto £47k+ elsewhere. What can I expect to pay for a 1996 model?
How long is a piece of string! 355's should be purchased on condition and history. Can buy a bad condition 98 car for cheap money and then spend the same amount again fixing it! Dealers dont necessarily = good cars.
There is also a big price variation across colours. Generally red/crema is the most sought after and silver/red the least.
Best bit of advice is be really careful about what your buying. The 355 spider in the right colour and condition is probably one of the best cars you can buy (IMO).

You will pick up a spyder for £35k, but it wont be a good one unless the seller is desperate! In fact if you look at the prices on autotrader right now, the cheapest is £38k, the next one is £42k and then they go through to £53 for the really low mileage stuff. That means that chances are only the seller at £38k might consider a drop to that sort of money (alternatively he might take the view that it is cheap and not move on price). I would be extremely careful around cars that cheap - there is usually a reason for it!
By March the summer pricing will start to kick in and the prices are likely to rise. I have also noticed that there are a lot of people now looking for a 355 spyder which is also likely to push 355 spyder prices up!

Red and cream is what I am after... only one colour for a ferrari and it has to be red IMO.
Personally my favourite colour for a 355 Spider is Tour de France blue.
They're always in yellow in the movies! Berlinettas and GTS's are better in red, but not the Spider

Then your a lucky man although i'm not sure how you could sell a car that looked like that! I'm struggling to come to terms with having to sell my Tuscan but i'd rather sell a kidney that part with a 355 spider in TDF blue! (One day one will be mine!)

Yes spoke to the guy before xmas on it, it was a finance repo that was bought at british car auctions by the trader.
The car has service history aledgedly but the as it was a finance repo is was not passed on, the trader was trying to get history but as of mid jan he still haddnt got it.

In reality I have seen good and bad ones with dealers ( I havent seen any via Main dealers though as they seem to have very few 355's too old now)
The real key to this is look at many and get a very good inspection, i guess either you buy a poor one cheap and then spend 000's or you pay a little more for a good one.
When I bought my last Porschge 993 I paid mid price but knew beceause of the inspection that it needed money spending on it, I/ Porsche spent circa £10k on it but it was 100% by the time I sold it.The guy buying it paid strong money for it but it was a 100%
So in short
Either buy cheap spend 000's getting it right
or spend a bit more and get one without needing work and without stories
There do seem to be several trade seller's ( not Verdi's, Rardly etc etc) but the average trader who sells mondeao's who bought one for himself bought cheap and is now trying to sell for strong money ( without spending any money on them) ...... beceause its a ferrari ( I saw 5 of these all c**p)

best option is to go to a main dealer and pay the extra and be safe in the knowledge that its "right"
You need to be just as deligent when buying a car from a dealer as private. Each route has pros and cons, but certainly no guarantees unless it's a watertight main Ferrari warranty.
