Really hanker after one of these at the moment, and have been looking at beetle based cars with an authentic feel to them - VW engine, bucket seats, moon dish alloys etc...

But I now have seen (although not yet driven) one with a scooby 2 litre turbo in the back, and Porsche gearbox brakes etc.

Leaving aside the immediate caution-to-the-wind thought that "speed matters", what's the consensus? I can't decide whether the subaru engine makes the car incredibly cool, or brash and possibly complicated to fix if it goes wrong?

I would not even think about it, unless you are single have have the next five years available to sort of all the design issues you will come across. (Plus a very deep wallet). Its very doubfull if a hybrid would have any resale value either. If its your first kit car, build it as stock to start with. Doing a really good job on even a standard build takes great time and skill and thats why there are thousands of half built kit cars in garages all over the UK.

Sorry, I should have been clear. I'm looking to buy a ready built one, not build it myself smile

The car in question is already built, by an automotive engineer some time ago (a pistonheader I believe). It has since then also been fettled by a specialist firm. It's not something I would ever think about building myself !!

When you say "hybrid", aren't all kit cars sort of hybrids? Assuming the build was well done in the first place, are you saying that a subaru engined car would be worth less than a beetle engined one?

Subaru into VW is a fairly well versed subject, not exactly new and should be something anyone half competent could do. I guess it's mostly down to how much you trust the engineers work! Might be worth getting an independent review on the vehicle if it's serious money.

If I were going to do a 356, I think I'd struggle not to do the scooby drop in!

Ricola ?, I believe he did one of the first conversions with the Subaru engine, removing the earlier Alfa Boxer.
That 356 looked really nice and if it is, his car, you will have a great kit.

PM me if you have any questions of if you'd like to arrange a test drive or factory visit.

Thats purely down to the engineering standard the cars be built to. Some people shoe horn overpowered engines into underated chassis, and end up with something thats a nightmare to drive in real terms. Its a murky world when its comes to individual engineering standards.
