pc driving me mad

My pc is not working anywhere near how I feel it should.

Ideally want to save my folders on a USB and strip everything off it that is not needed, ie take it back to the day I got it.

Can this be done and if so how?

Best thing to do is, as you said, copy everything you want to keep on a CD/DVD/memory stick or whatever and do a fresh install of Windows.
I try and do one every year now, it sorts so much crap out and makes things much smoother.

yep

Copy IE passwords
Copy emails, contacts
copy My documents
Copy temp outlook attachment directory
copy bookmarks
make a list of programs installed

This is why I always keep windows installed on a separate partition. Much less stuff to backup when it's time to clear and then you can just copy the important windows stuff to the other partition.

Saying that I've not reinstalled for 2 years now, it's about due for one.

For a full format (a clean start as it were ) then pop your windows disc and change your boot order to include CD-ROM and away you go

Do you have the original disc that came with the machine? If so, put it in the CD drive, then restart the machine. It should do the rest automatically with a few prompts from you. Remember, it will wipe everything off that you had in there originally, so make sure all that is saved to a DVD or a remote drive.
