I'm thinking of getting the popular Offord Cherry Bomb treatment for my 4.0 - is there anyone near Farnham, Surrey who has had it done, who would let me hear what's it like from inside the car?

I'm pretty sure I want it done, but hard acceleration in second gear sounds wonderful - as well as everything else there's a really nice whine which I don't hear in the other gears. I suspect if I get the CBs done they might drown that out.

Can anyone help?

Yes! I've just had it done, I'm about 25 mins from Farnham. I'm often in Guildford too, I'd be happy to meet up sometime and let you have a listen.

Sounds promising - do they need to "bed in" or anything, as is the case with a new exhaust?

I've heard conflicting report, someone said they tend to deepen in tone a little as they get older, probably carbon deposits building up (guess).

It does sound good though, especially under acceleration and on the over-run. Its not too taxing at cruising speeds either which is good.

You're welcome to have a listen sometime, I'll take you for a spin so you can hear it.

Now -

ages ago when I had another car that popped and banged, I was told it was excess fuel detonating in the exhaust. Which is fine, except that the excess fuel would be poisoning the cats and ruining them.

Is that not true??

I'd be interested, because I can smell suphur occasionally, which I think might be the cat? Any thoughts appreciated.

I smell that too with the standard exhaust - I think it's just the cats getting up to temperature?

The other thing I heard is that if the excess fuel is detonating in the cat chamber, it can physically damage the cat itself...

If you want to hear a comparison I'm having the "straight through" treatment done at the moment... I won't be able to rag the nuts off it as the engine is also having work done but more than happy to come over to see you to let you hear the results... In fact, I'm looking for every excuse in the book to get through the 1000 running in miles!
