"Will you be able to get a good one for £20k anytime soon?"
Short answer ?? Nope !!!
You'll end up with a money pit and wishing you'd spent an extra £5000 - £10,000 to get a nice one.....
When I was first looking for one I'd heard lots of horror stories about reliability and dangerous handling etc. The truth is however they are actually very reliable indeed, the alternator failing is about the most likely thing to leave you stranded and thats a quick and easy fix (upgraded parts are about £30!)
My advice would be to buy the best one you can afford and stay away from the early cars if you can as these had some build quality issues. A 92' onwards (battery in the front model) will have had most of the factory upgrades (electrics and handling tweaks) and should be a good choice as the build quality was sorted by then.
A GTB, GTS or Spider will be even better with the addition of an extra 20hp but they fetch a premium and you wont get anything decent for less than about £28k - £30k private and nearer £32k - £35k from a dealer.

Well
I suspect that someone got an absolute bargain for about £19k a few weeks back.
OK, it was in the middle of nowhere, and it was in Grigio Titanium, not the most popular colour (but it looked lovely) ... but I suspect that those were the only reasons that it was so cheap.
As a guide, and not a rose tinted glasses one, a good condition, both aesthetically and mechanically, with good history 348 TB or TS should cost between 23-26 for RHD and 21-24 for LHD.
A couple of grand more for the GTB or GTS and maybe a touch more for the Spider.
As for the GTC, forget it unless you have about £45k!
If looked after yes, they should be very reliable. Doing say 6000 miles a year you will need to budget about £1500 to £2000k a year to cover one service, tyres and any other general bits and bobs. allow £3000 if you are doing 10-12,000 miles a year.
The only biggie to watch out for is the 3 yearly cambelt change which is an engine out job and with the service comes to about £1500. Does give you chance to get it all spruced up while it's out though
If your budget is early 20s, go the LHD route.

Check out the F348 thread on here last on teh same subject. Lots of info in there.
Basically, a great reliable car & no you won't get a good one for £20k. You'll get plenty of poor ones for that though.

Personally I found the handling awful, especially at anything over about 80mph,
Then I can guarantee the 348 you drove was faulty or badly set up. I can assure you that a properly set up one is rock solid stable at 170mph, perhaps more.FezzaDezza said:

Is there really that much differance between the two though ? unfortunatly most of the very few cars for sale are 90 or 91 models therefore rear battery . Surely as they 17 years old wont all the problems of been ironed out a long time ago ? i thought the main differance was the injection system ?Edited by FezzaDezza on Thursday 7th February 12:07

also bear in mind that the 348 has long been the unfashionable V8 F-car
that looks like its changing now and it's undeniable quality is shining through.
this means that the major depreciation has already happened so if you do spend more on a good one (and keep it in good condition) then you're unlikely to lose too much.
it really does pay to buy a decent example.

I think when you look at the cars available its like anything.
The cheepest ones are going to be dogs and the 30k plus cars are going to be minters.
But then you think for 32k plus i can have an F355 again probably a dog when the minters are 50k plus.
There are nice examples out there its just finding them.
I've paid bottom money for cars before and then spent a fortune on maintenance by which time i could have had a better car.
I've never driven a 348 so i can't comment but i would imagine with no p.a.s. and a heavy clutch they could be hard work but rewarding.
I hope to be in a position to buy in the near future and will look at both the 355 and 348 and will buy the best car i can afford weather they are stable at 160 or not.
You also hear people saying these cars are slow !? - Compared to a Veyron Yes.
If you had a mondial in the garage it would still be a ferrari !!!

Most cars in the FOC classifieds are usually 10% over market value. Like any owners club member, they seem to think that paying £85 a year automatically makes their car better than if they weren't a member.
So, vauxcrayzee, take a look at those 348s for sale, and deduct 10% from the asking price posted by the FOCers to get a view of the market

No, that's just silly. Many of the ads on the FOC website are not even from members. Anecdotally cars sell quite well off there but I've no idea how the sale prices relate to the asking prices. Of course there are always sellers who over-value their cars and buyers who undervalue them and given most of the ads on the FOC site are private ads there are probably a greater proportion where that is the case than on, say, Autotrader. Plus, given that it is free there are probably a few of the "I don't really want to sell but if someone will pay me X..." type ads.Jonathan

Thats what I had said to myself!!I picked up mine in December

I don't use it as a daily runner - although I am out in it today

£20k might pick you up a left hooker needing belts and a little work, but as long as you research thoroughly and take your time, you'll hopefully be able to know which ones to avoid.
If you can get another 5k together it will stand you in better stead, into RHD territory and all that

It's not silly Jonathan, it's a generally recognised pattern ... you see it in the Ferrari Club classifieds, the Porsche Club, the TVR Club to name but three. People use the principle that if they are a member of the owners' club then they must have a really good, well looked after car ... which may well be true, but it does show in the sometimes "optimistic" prices asked.

Hi all,
I'm determined to own one before I'm 30... so was looking for anyone with experience of owning one. What are they like to live with? Are they reliable?
Will you be able to get a good one for £20k anytime soon?
Any advice welcome
Cheers

having seen a few at lemans last week I seem to have the 348 itch again
however looking at the classifeds it seems whilst prices 6 months ago were £22K bottom to around £25K these have now increased to £25K bottom to £30K average
coincidence of timimg or are we finally seeing an increase in the 348 residuals?

Sunds like the usual summer uplift in prices, could also be that nice ones are becoming much harder to find....
I think you're about right there Des. The good ones do seem to be getting harder to sniff out and they go fast when they appear. One of the guys near me offered me a nice one when I was looking but the one I opted for just had the edge. However, when he put it up for sale properly a month or so back I noticed it went practically within the week.Obviously summer has an effect, but I somehow don't think we will see good 348s at the price they were 12 months ago.
