Ok stupid question I know but....

I am looking at getting some Philips X-treme bulbs for my (wifes) A3 as the ones in it are poor.

I was wondering what bulbs, and how many I need. If it makes any difference it has the lower spot/fog lamps and is the 2000 model with the one piece headlights.

The bulbs I am looking to get:

Why do VAG make such poor headlamps?

The philips extreme (Xenon) are very good and a quick easy way to upgrade. They took our Passat light output from V.Poor to OK/Good. However, some comments:-

Bulbs are increasing hard to get at these days - do check yours as VW recommend dealer fitment for the Passat - and when you have spent an hour swearing at them trying to get them back in you will know why. The clips are really poor and I suspect the A3 ones will be similar.

A pair of good xenons will set you back around £35. For only double that you can get HID Xenon delivered on E-Bay (from Hong Kong). They are branded Bosch HID and one might assume that they are fakes but they are very good quality and 10x brighter than your standard bulb. Select 6000K daylight - higher Kelvin ones are illegal and too blue, but I have passed an MOT with these - they have a good cut off like originals and get no problems with other drivers being upset. WARNING - if your A3 has the same fiddly chrome clips, you need to modify these bny cutting through, inserting the bulb and re-gluing using aradite. Fiddly but well worth it. For £70 and a bit of effort you have a £700 option fitted.

Once you have used HID's, you'll never want a standard bulb every again.

Try Osram Nightbreaker bulbs, I replaced the standard ones in my A6 with these and the difference was astounding. Now fitted them to wife's MB E class and the MOT tester argued that they were HID's!! Excuse the pun but they really are brilliant!

Don't you need to upgrade your wiring for HID lamps?? Due to the higher current?

No, as they use less current.
