Can anyone give me any ownership experience of these puppies? Are they fairly bombproof. What sort of mileage is wise between engine rebuilds?

Are they quiet enough to avoid triggering noise meters on most trackdays? What db do they generally knock out?

Its a leftfield outside contender to fill the space from my S1 Elise. I was after an S2 Exige as a weekend toy and occasional trackday plaything. However, its almost too practical to have as a weekend toy and I couldnt go back to having a sports car as my 1 vehicle (the 206 is for the missus to use). STumbled across a Fury R1 for sale and it just sounds a total scream!

I can give you a biased opinion on owning a BEC.

Current engine been in the car 10k miles, plenty of those on track, never put a spanner on it.

Noise, can be a problem, good silencer needed also a lot of induction noise that can also be a problem, with a race can fitted forget it.

As for a trackday/weekend toy you will not find better unless you put your hand much deeper into your pocket.

I've had a 'blade engined Fury since early November as a weekend play thing. I'll let someone else comment on the R1 specifically, but in general with BECs its more economical to replace the block than bother rebuild it. Even the 'blade engined one is stupidly rapid, an R1 Fury will make you Elize feel pedestrian. The sequential box is something I wasn't entirely sure about, but now I absolutely love clutchless upchanges and somehow its easier to match the revs perfectly on the downshifts than with a conventional manual.

The full bodied design of the Fury makes it rather more practical than an equivalent 7, with plenty of room for small-medium sized holdalls on the side pods, and because the cockpit area is wider its more confortable for larger framed individuals than narrow 7's. Having said that, its not particularly useable. Since having it more than once I've wished for something you could still take when the forecast was slightly iffy for later in the day. R888 or A048s are not forgiving to damp or cold roads!

I had a Fireblade Fury (VERY strong in a motorway crash ;-) ) and now have an R1 Phoenix. So I can sort of help. You do not rebuild the engine. You enjoy and thrash the pants off it, and IF it ever blows up then you just stick another engine in for about £750 and 4 hours of your time. I did 6,000 miles in my blade with no mercy, destroyed it in an aquaplning incident and it is now back fully repaired by its new owner, singing sweetly on its original engine.

Noise wise, they are noisy compared to car engines. You may struggle to get them comfortably under 100db. My local track is Brands so it does not matter, but forget trying Bedford Autodrome!

But the upsides are fantastic. They are awesome. My friend Jim Giblett is SVA'in his R1 Fury next month (he buit my current R1 Phoenix in '93)
We could bang on for hours about car engine v Bike engine, all i was say is that if you are prepared to travel the particular journey by bike then a BEC will be no problem. I am Relishing our Summer trip around Europe this June, 2000 miles in 10 days via the Alps, Monaco, Milau Bridge and Pyranese. And a run through Barcelona City!

Compared to an S1 Elise (even Exige) performance wise it would pull its pants down and smack it's bum HARD. Nothing like it for the money, and 30mpg on a run. You really need to get a good ride in it before comitting, but if you do not "get it" within 100yds the its probobly not for you......

I went from an Elise (http://www.elises.co.uk) to a Fisher Fury R1 (http://www.robcollingridge.com/FuryR1/) and there's a load of info on my web sites.

The Fury is way quicker but much more involving and raw, especially in the form I built mine (aeroscreen, no doors, no reverse, etc.).

I'm an S1 Elise convertee as well and now own a Blackbird engined Fury.

It really is a stunning car, extremely quick and an absolute hoot to drive with masses of power available for the weight. Like yourself I wanted a car just for occasional use and it fits the bill perfectly.

Compared to the Elise it's quicker (much), less useable, and more of a hooligan's tool. The Elise is such a sweet chassis, I really can't criticise it at all, a truly sublime drive. The Fury is really little more than a race car with numberplates. Great fun!
