Advice for a newbie please
Discussion
Hi Folks,
I saw Ted and had a delightful factory visit on Wednesday and was actually a bit shocked at just how fantastic the yellow car looked under the factory lights - truly awesome .... so yellow and LS7 for me. The problem is that realistically it will take a year to finish so I am looking for a used car as a stopgap.
The snag is that I have been bitten rather badly by Trackday Disease - last year was my first year at it and I did 30 trackdays (!) in the Turbo Nutter Barge. I've done the usual searches and fear that if I try to do say 25 trackdays with an old school SBC/accusump then I will have a miserable time rebuiding engines. I am known to be very mechanically sympathetic to my cars.
So, your thoughts please:
Am I bonkers to contemplate lots of trackdays with a used car or is it possible a low power motor may survive?
Does anybody have a trackday suitable car for sale, maybe with LSx or Audi/BMW/Jag?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - many thanks
Stuart

Oh, I hope I'm not responsible for your feelings on the SBC track reliability!!
I have done 8 track days in 2007 with two rebuilds now. One oil related and one piston issue.
I'm going dry sump and race carb for 2008 so give me a year to report on it's reliability.
30 trackdays is a lot of miles and a lot of wear......for any car. Good luck though!!

LuckyP - no it's not just your experiences that cause me to panic about SBC reliability - there seems to be plenty of tales of woe out there.
I guess however you are somewhat responsible for my getting the hots for the Ultima!!!!
When I saw your wonderful car at Brands early last year I just knew that the EVO had to be relegated to mere "Jap Turbo Tank" status ....

Stuart,
Why not try and get a S/H SBC ultima with decent build as cheap as poss and then look at reto fitting LSx series engine????.....there are cheaper options to the full on LS7 that will still give mighty performance and good reliability......just a thought...
ATB, Simon
PS...30 trackdays per annum is pretty impressive stuff!!

Thanks for the idea, although I was (tad optimistically) hoping not to pour too much money into what is a short term project.
Do you have a prefered supplier for LScheaper?
My track use for the last 12 months was more than I thought:
31 trackdays
2 sprints
2 Top Gear circuit
6 driver training days
19,000 miles .......... gulp..
I reckon this may explain my nervousness at getting involved in the old SBC.
